Peyton Kennedy C. Barron Euro History 10/16/11 Braveheart Movie Critique Braveheart is a movie about William Wallace, played as Mel Gibson, and his search for independence. The movie was directed by Mel Gibson and produced by Mel Gibson, Alan Ladd Jr., and Bruce Davey. I watched this movie in my room on Netflix on Tuesday. This movie was based on the Battle of Stirling Bridge and Falkirk. The movie was shot in color, and is sadly mostly fictional. William Wallace is a Scottish rebel who leads a revolt against the English ruler Edward the Longshanks, who wishes to take the crown of Scotland for himself. Wallace's father and brother, along with many others, lost their lives trying to free Scotland. Wallace again loses another one of his loved ones, Wallace begins his quest to make Scotland free once and for all. Braveheart is the partly historical and partly fictional, story of William Wallace, a poor Scottish man who fights for his country's freedom from English rule around the end of the 13th century. In the 14th Century, Wallace leads in a rebellion against the tyranny of the English King. The Scots are angry with the brutal English invaders, but they lack leadership to fight back. Wallace creates a legend of himself, with his courageous defense of his people and attacks on the English. Wallace is captured in the battle of Falkirk, and hanged and quartered by the English King. Mel Gibson’s role of William Wallace was a real man. The historical accuracy is not very accurate. It was accurate when he led a rebellion, won the battle of Sterling Bridge, lost the Battle of Falkirk, and was killed by the King. They were portrayed this way because they had to have historical accuracy or there would be no point to the movie. Yes, there were real events portrayed in the movie. The battle scenes were portrayed correctly except for the beginning of the Battle of Falkirk because, they started off on the right side. And in the Battle of Stirling Bridge, Wallace did not invent Pike Blocks. The inaccurate portrayal of William Wallace was understandable, because the movie had to have “movie magic,” often times when movies are completely historical they are boring. Braveheart was shot in Ireland, Scotland, and the UK. Yes, these were accurately portrayed locastions. Irish clothing in this time was largely Saffron dyed shirts, usually yellow. The weapons are not accurate. Not much of the movie was well done in this sense. The clothing, such as kilts were not worn in battle. Hairstyle was semi-correct the womens hairstyle was not accurate but the men differed which made it accurate. I believe this movie was a great movie. Was it a historically accurate movie' No not at all. I believe the plot was done well, it flowed nicely and wasn’t choppy. I believe it was the perfect speed and the director did a good job. The actors played their roles very well and I enjoyed watching them. The movie grasped my focus very well; it was interesting throughout the movie. Never allowing me to look away. It did confuse the historical side more because it lacked historical detail. I would recommend this movie to another student because it is very interesting and full of action. This movie could have added more historical evidence and facts, because it drawled away from being a good historical movie.
