Idea: How humans are designed to be the same. Concrete detail: In the beginning of the book, the Director of Hatecheries and Conditioning shows his new students the Central London hatchery and conditioning centre where they learn about test tube babies. in the brave new world, people are designed to live in a community where ten world leaders guide them. the system they follow by has five castes and they are born chosen to be one of the Alpha, beta, Gamma, Delta or Epsilon. the test tube babies are made through Bokanovsky and Podsnap Processes which makes millions of almost identical human embryos. later in the book, the boys learn about hypnopaedic method also known as sleep teaching which is used for infants while they're sleeping. Quote: "And this," said the Director opening the door, "is the Fertilizing Room." . Chapter 1 Commentary: the brave new world has been going for many years now and the system they live by are keeping people away from revolting against their leaders. people are all created with same embryos, being borned through technology like test tubes which makes them think alike. also they are taught by hypnopaedic from young ages even before they could talk so they have been brainwashed ever since. making people in those unbelievable ways by designing them makes it difficult for an individual to revolt against the brave new world and this shows how "utopia" will last for them. '' 2. idea: moral degradation and moral integrity. concrete details: in the garden, girls and boys are running around naked playing with one another. Huxley describes one boy and a girl who are playing together. a rudimentary sexual game. by seeing that the Director is pleased as if that was something you would compliment about. but in one scene, a nurse is taking a boy to see Assistant Superintendent of Psychology because she noticed that the boy wasn't comfortable playing with a girl in a sexual way. the little girl who is hurt by that is told to play with other boys by the director. quote: "And a very good name too," said the Director. "Run away now and see if you can find some other little boy to play with." chap 3 commentary: children even under 10 are learning to be active with each others sexual organs which makes it normal for them to be like that when they're older since they have been taught and encouraged that way by the society. the society is against family and home so when kids learn that the erotic play is considered abnormal and immoral for children they all laugh and are shocked to hear them. this shows that the society is controlling people by giving them pleasure and also soma so that they will be easier to control. '' 3. idea: the society makes sure women get "treated" when they go through pregnancy substitute. concrete details: when Lenina and fanny are talking about dating, fanny mentions about the first Pregnancy Substitute. fanny explains that the doctor recommended her to get treated because most brunettes with wide pelvises gets them when they are around 17 and that shes already two years late. she is told from her doctor that it effects her health and that it will make a huge difference for the next three to four years. quote: "I've been feeling rather out of sorts lately," Fanny explained. "Dr. Wells advised me to have a Pregnancy Substitute." chap 3 commentary: the pregnancy substitute that fanny is talking about is the stage when women are around 21 to 30s when they start feeling as if they need to get pregnant or having thoughts about starting a family. this is considered unhealthy and just like fanny's doctor said, shes needed to get it fixed so that she will feel "healthy" again. the society made it abnormal for people to have a family and that it is a shameful thing so the people start to think that women having a pregnancy substitute is a good idea for women since they think having thoughts about getting pregnant and having a family is gross. this keeps away the communities to go against the the brave new world and starting family relationships. 4. idea: people are encouraged to date for less than 2 to 3 weeks. concrete detail: when Lenina tells fanny that shes has been seeing Henry foster for 4 months, fanny is shocked and shows disapprovement. lenina, even though she blushed when fanny asked her if there's any other guys she has been seeing but still she thinks it's not that big of a deal to be with someone for 4months but to fanny, who is considered normal in this world, thinks that its dangerous and abnormal. she explains how the D.H.C. is against anything to do with long intense relationships and how mad he will be if he knew that lenina has only been with one guy for 4 months. quote: "Only four months! I like that. And what's more," Fanny went on, pointing an accusing finger, "there's been nobody else except Henry all that time. Has there'" chap 3 commentary: just like what fanny said, the D.H.C will be furious if he knew someone was only seeing one person for a long time. the society encourages everyone to date only for certain amount of time so that they wont develop feelings for one another. fanny and lenina both knows that Henry foster has other girls and fanny describes him as always being a gentleman. . they know that if people started to date one certain person they would consider making a family which is disgusted in the world. people are usually shocked if they hear that someone has been with the same person for 4 months because the average time people go out is around two weeks. '' 5. idea: the government uses soma to shield people from reality concrete detail: lenina and Bernard are on their date where she sees people outside of the brave new world. for the first time, she sees an old man and smelly man and just about everyone who are not familiar with where she is from. she hates that place and as usual she habitually reached for her soma to escape from this reality but finds that she has left it somewhere else. quote: "But it's terrible," Lenina whispered. "It's awful. We ought not to have come here." She felt in her pocket for her soma'only to discover that, by some unprecedented oversight, she had left the bottle down at the rest-house. Bernard's pockets were also empty. ...Lenina was left to face the horrors of Malpais unaided." chapter 7 commentary: the fact that lenina wanted her soma at Malpais shows that her only way out from this horrible place was drugs. everything was too much for her but she was really forced to see everything since she was on her date with Bernard. and since she didn't have her soma, she had to face the terror of her life not being sober and to feel those real intense feelings. In the book, chapter 17, Mond argues that people who wants stability and comfort, they can't let traditional religions to get in their ways and the only thing that gets people to not think about those ways is by soma: soma has replaced the virtues of Christianity thinking they need no God for protection. 6. idea: breaking free form stereotypes and social expectations. concrete detail: When Lenina saw two women breast feeding their kids she quickly turned away and felt embarrassed for them, knowing that is against her world. She described it as it being indecent, while Bernard openly comments those women. Unlike Lenina, who thinks soma has worn off Bernard, Bernard thinks the family relationship, the relationship between the mother and the child is so comforting and amazing since he has never experienced it himself. quote: "What a wonderfully intimate relationship," he said, deliberately outrageous. "And what an intensity of feeling it must generate! I often think one may have missed something in not having had a mother. And perhaps you've missed something in not being a mother, Lenina. Imagine yourself sitting there with a little baby of your own. …" chapter 7 commentary: In this scene, Lenina is grossed out by the physical appearance of people outside of utopia. She has never seen or wanted to see how those people lived and when she does see them she watches them with pity, thinking she is far greater than them because of their dirty smell. In contrast, Bernard is little more experienced with the outside world by his knowledge of them being physically old which Lenina cannot understand. The fact that he said the human relationship between the mother and the child is "wonderfully intimate" it shows that he is different from Lenina. The love in the brave new world might be something abnormal and disgusting but to Bernard it is something that's new, something that he thinks is beautiful even if the physical appearance might be shocking. The reaction Lenina showed towards Bernard is how we would react if the person has said something inappropriate and the way Bernard thinks is different shows that he will be the one who will rebel against utopia. 7. idea: The contrast between the outside world and utopia. concrete detail: John the savage and Mustapha Mond is discussing their point of views of utopia and the world before the brave new world started. The reason this whole discussion started because John wanted to go into exile with Helmholtz and Bernard and Mond didn't allow for that to happen, and that's because he wants to see if John will convert into Utopian ways and experiment with him. Mond talks about "happiness", how he chose "happiness" over science. But later in the year he learns that science is a public danger, that they cannot allow for it to undo the works it has done, for example, Bokanovsky process. However, John is still against the fact that everyone feelings for themselves because of soma and he is disgusted by the fact that everyone is designed the same. And just like John, Mond knows of "God" and he says that since all people need is stability and happiness, something the brave new world give through soma, so there is no need for God and religion. quote: "The Savage nodded, frowning. "You got rid of them. Yes, that's just like you. Getting rid of everything unpleasant instead of learning to put up with it. Whether 'tis better in the mind to suffer the slings and arrows of outrageous fortune, or to take arms against a sea of troubles and by opposing end them … But you don't do either. Neither suffer nor oppose. You just abolish the slings and arrows. It's too easy." " (chapter 17). commentary: Through chapters 16 and 17, Moustapha Mond and John the savage are arguing about their world. The contrast between Mond's world and John's is tremendous and John can't seem to understand the aspect of the brave new world. Mond explains to him that people will choose happiness over art like Shakespeare and the Bible so there is no need for the Leaders to tell them about art in the first place
