The Book of Eli
Title: The Book of Eli - Movie
Director: Albert Hughes
Source: Warner Bros Pictures
Summery
The book of Eli is about a man who lives and struggles to survive in a violent post-apocalyptic society caused by a nuclear disaster. The scene of the city creates drama to the watchers as we see the full picture of the fallen city.
Eli, has been wandering westward across North America, carrying a book that he guards closely while confronting many conflicts by the highway bandits.
He survives by hunting small animals and seeking goods in destroyed houses and vehicles to trade in villages for water and supplies. Since the water was a valuable source on earth in the movie.
When he reaches a village ruled by the powerful mobster, Carnegie, the man views Eli's impressive fighting skills and offers Eli a place within his gang. Carnegie presses his blind lover Claudia to send her daughter, Solara, to at least convince Eli to spend the night by sleeping with him. However, Eli proves to be the better man when he gently declines her advances. The girl sees Eli's book, and when Carnegie finds out he beats her mother until she reveals what she saw.
Eli now faces a major conflict in protecting the girl and the book at the same time against outnumbered gang. The fighting scenes are often covered in shadows to attract the watcher’s curiosity about Eli who is so mysterious throughout the movie.
By the end, Eli defeats the gang and finally reaches the North America to donate the book to the facilities where all the famous books and play scripts such as shakespear’s plays are kept and protected. The book that he has been protecting all the time appears to be the last remaining Bible on Earth. We also learn that Eli is a blind man and the bible was for the blind only.
The movie itself was quite dark to create the out casted and rejected feeling of the city that they are currently living in. The main shots were long shots or bird’s eye view, again to show the concept of the post apocalyptic city.
The move, The Book of Eli relates to our current core text, Looking for Alibrandi the book, by Melina Marchetta by the fact that both main characters finds their love and find the place where they belong.
Eli, whilst on a journey to the facility to insure the book’s safety, he finds a girl that he tries so hard to protect, were similarly, Josephine, while being on a journey to finish HSC, she goes out with a boy called Jacob Coote. Although the story and the way they love is different, it is still within the concept of love.
Eli also searches and travels to find a place where he belongs, and where he can entrust the bible to. He takes a long, hard journey, fighting for survival to eventually find the place he was looking for.
The same theme goes for the book Looking for Alibrandi. She is on a constant journey in search for Identity, to figure out where she belongs. We can see this through the book when Josie says “I’ll run to be emancipated. If my society will let me.” Through this text, we can see that Josephine is not happy to be where she Is now and is always looking for a place where she really belongs.
Both characters are always surrounded by constant conflicts stopping them from their journey. Eli comes in contact with a strong gang, and fights to protect and for his life. Josephine, is always finding problems caused by temptation of friends, family problems and relationships. Josephine says “Katia Alibrandi, Christina Alibrandi, Josephine Alibrandi. Our whole lives, just like our names, are lies.” Through this we can see that Josephine has been lied to, and was hurt by it. Like this Both characters are always finding troubles while undergoing both physical and emotional journey.
The movie The book of Eli helped enhance my understanding of the concept of the inner journey because Eli, throughout the journey experiences many things. He has seen the world change into hell, losing his family in the process. This has most likely to have a big impact on his inner journey.
In the movie, because it’s a post apocalyptic settings, most of the modern technology cannot be seen other then the heavy armed weapons. This symbolises the further destruction of what little is left. People are acting on their selfishness whilst Eli is trying to protect the Bible. This would have created quite a dilemma of Eli seeing how destructive and selfish people are. Making him question himself whether he is doing the right thing. Yet despite all the harshness that he suffers and sees, he is still trying to do what he believes is right and never looks back. Through this point, I learnt that inner journey is not all about learning or discovering something new, but it can be to have the will to stick to what you believe is right despite all the clashes.
Another way it helped me understand the topic of inner journey, was like most other films, theme of romance. Loving someone, and getting to know one another helps you mature and develop by learning new things. This movie includes romance in a unique way that it cannot be missed. It tells us that even if you are only concentrated and care for one thing, love comes naturally. Through love, he felt the warmth of being with another person in 30 years. For 30 years he has been roaming around the apocalyptic world alone. Continuously fighting and concerned about the days food. But now he was able to share stories and talk on while on journey.
Another major theme that has helped me enhance my understanding of inner journey was the relief and the comfort he has felt when he has finished his journey. As the ending approaches it is clear for us to see that he feels relieved not to be fighting for his life and to find peace. We can see the details of his expression through the close up shots near the end.
These themes and the story line of the movie that Eli has gone through both physical and emotional, inner journey as he finishes his mission.
MONSTER MAYHEM
Title: MONSTER MAYHEM- Book
Writer: Claire Steeden
Source: PARRAGON
Monster Mayhem is one of the short stories from the book Magical Tales for young readers.
Although this is a book for primary kids It had the suitable concept of inner journey and a deep and meaningful story. I believe more of the kids books represents the inner journey better then adult young adult books.
Monster Mayhem is about a group of monsters who does not socialise with each other and are terribly vain about their own appearances. They didn’t care at all what others said and they didn’t care about others at all. They were always fighting and arguing on who is more remarkable of all. Even by the characters names we can see this is children’s book. The names of the characters are created by assonance, e.g. Rugged Red, Perfect Purple, Brilliant Blue extra. The book is also a picture book so we can see the characteristics and the colours of the monsters through the pictures. One day, Gorgeous Green who was the Great Governor of the monsters came up with an idea to stop them from fighting and arguing and care about each other for once. So she decided to open up a party. Although the party had a wonderful foods and bands playing, all the monsters were busy looking at themselves in the mirror, thinking that they were the best looking amongst other monsters. The fed up Governor, asked the Whizzle the Wizard to cast a spell on all the monsters to lose their colours and be grey just like everyone else so they can all have fun and not worry or argue about their looks. Even though the monster were confused and furious, the Great Governor’s plan worked and they began to socialised and have fun with each other.
They learnt their lesson that even when their body colour was changed back, they continued to socialise and played games with each other, other than being self obsessed.
