Good morning everyone, today I will like to talk about body language. Body language is the gestures, postures, and facial expressions by which a person expresses various physical, mental, or emotional states and communicates non verbally with others. There are many types of body language including gestures, posture, facial expressions and eye movements. Firstly I am going to talk about gestures. A gesture is a motion of the limbs or body made to express or help express thought or to emphasize speech. Did you know that one of the most basic and powerful gestures is when a person crosses their arms across the chest. This can indicate that a person is putting up an unconscious barrier between themselves and others or expressing opposition. It could also just mean that they are cold. This is a very famous picture from America persuading their men to sign up for the army. The powerful gesture of pointing the finger directly at the audience appears to single them out and makes this a very personal advertisement. How your brain responds to a ‘thumbs up’ or other hand gestures depends on your culture and race. The thumbs-up is normally recognized as a positive gesture in the Western culture, while the infamous middle-finger salute is seen as negative. But to someone from a foreign country, it may mean something else. The next type of body language is posture. Posture is a position of the body or of body parts. The posture may reflect on how that person is feeling. For example, if a person has a slumped posture, it may indicate that they are feeling tired, sad or bored. If a person is standing up tall with their chest out and chin up, it will make others feel that they are proud and confident. Facial expression is a type of body language using the motions or positions of the muscles of the face. These movements convey the emotional state of the person to others. There are many types of facial expressions The easiest way to hide your emotions is to cover your face. Can you tell what this girl is thinking' Another example would be when poker players wear sunglasses. Eye movements are the voluntary or involuntary movement of the eyes. It is also important to note the eyebrows. If the eyes are the windows to the soul – then the eyebrows are the windows to the eyes. Basically, notice how a person’s eyebrow will generally rise when they meet someone, see something they like or are surprised. They will drop and tense when someone is angry, suspicious or annoyed. Eyes generally smile along with the mouth when someone is happy. Are there any people that don’t have the use of body language' Yes. Parkinson’s disease Parkinson's disease is a degenerative disorder of the brain that often impairs the sufferer's motor skills, speech, and other functions. One of the symptoms is facial masking where they have no expression of the face. This is one of the examples Body language is an important part of communication in order for people to be able to express themselves clearly. Remember, that like a person's words, his or her body might not always be a clear indicator to his or her true emotions.
