Blue walls, Blue sheets
I live in a room not a large room, no it is quite small not nearly enough space for two. The floor is constantly covered by clothes, letters, dishes and all sorts of miscellaneous things. A small white desk occupies a corner my laptop sits in the middle taking up most of the free space, on the right sits the antique oil lantern I collected somewhere in my travels, orange with rust and a fresh wick that will never see oil nor flame. To the left a white porcelain porcine a piggy bank if you will, heavy with a year or mores spare change. Past Mr. Pigglesworth a candle low from use, a bottle of air freshener that’s more for show then use, and the bottles of pills my love takes twice daily all permanently reside with me at the desk, an empty Starbucks cup is just making an extended stay until some free time to clean can be made. Above the little white desk hangs a humorous wood plaque presented to me by my brothers in arms detailing my inability to turn down a dare, to its left hangs a clock depicting two characters from Tim Burtons, The Nightmare Before Christmas, in an eternal embrace. The clock always reads seven forty-one and eighteen seconds because its non-working state its covered by an obnoxious orange squid hat won over the summer form a trip to The Great Escape. Just before the door the rooms only light a crooked wall sconce hangs, off white and covered in dust its glass shape modeled after a pitcher plant casts a soft yellow glow about the room. Hanging off the lonely light hang a pair of dog-tags given to my beloved fiancée to remember me by while I was stationed in southern California. This brings us to the door, a wooden portal to the world, around the ill-fitting knob a scarf is wrapped to hold the door closed. I have always liked the scarf its long black fabric interwoven with yellows, blues, purples, reds, greens, and a what is likely a host of other colors my eyes cannot see. Upon the door two posters rest first no bigger than a deck of cards is the album cover to Pink Floyds The Dark Side of the Moon, but dominating the door covering nearly its whole width is a portrait of my girlfriends favorite singer Ani DiFranco. Past the door lives the tall black tower fan purchased on a midnight excursion to Wal-Mart in an attempt to beat the summers sweltering heat, its cord crosses in front of the door often times getting caught up preventing its closure and causing fits of toe kicks in endeavors to dislodge it. In the far left corner of the room is a small closet overflowing with the clothes of two as well as blankets, books, shoes, slippers and stuffed animals.
The narrow left wall is dominated by the forty-two inch flat screen TV sitting atop an old white dresser. The dresser has three drawers all over flowing with odds and ends to the point none of them can fully close. Hiding behind the TV is the Xbox for which I was conned into buying, its for us I was told yet she is the one that uses it most all the time. Above these, are two shelves the lower is home to a picture of myself and my love taken last winter in the parking lot of the school where she works after I surprised her with lunch. The shelf also holds various knickknacks including a comically large Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle pez dispenser. The top shelf almost at the celling holds more than a dozen bottles of lotion of every description.
The back wall is mostly bare save the open window its dusty blinds drawn low and yellowed with age, and a bright tie-dye cloth poster featuring a skull with a dancing bear from the band The Grateful Dead. Last but far from least is the bed a ragged twin mattress on a newer box spring set on the floor more a child bed then that shared by two adults its currently covered by blue grey sheets a few shades to dark to match the walls. I love this bed even though two springs poke up and stab me as I sleep if for only that when we sleep crammed into the little space we have I have no choice but to be close to the woman I love.
