The planning pyramid unit planning form has many adaptations that relate to many systematic teaching strategies. First, creating a “content map” is an adaptation that relates to content presentation. A concept map is a diagram presenting the relationships between concepts. They are graphical tools for organizing and representing knowledge. A concept map is a way of representing relations between ideas, images, or words. A concept map is a very efficient way to present content. The most “effective presentation of new content typically begins with an overview, or advance organizer, of the activities students will do and how they fit contextually with previous and future lessons and units” (). Second, putting students in “cooperative learning groups to learn material in textbook” (), is an adaptation that relates to instructional grouping. “Mixed ability grouping is an approach in which small groups of students work in cooperative groups to learn and to ensure that others on their team learn as well” (). Having the students learn the material in a textbook in a group will have beneficial characteristics such as; positive interdependence, individual accountability, cooperative skills, self-reflection, and goal setting. Next, having the students listen to an audio tape of the chapter is an adaptation that relates to Instructional grouping and provided practice. Having the students listen to an audio tape of a chapter is instructional grouping, because the classroom is reading and learning as a whole. If a teacher wants to review a chapter that has already been read, can use an audio tape to have the students review and practice the chapter. Finally, having the students work in “study buddies to practice to quizzes and tests” is an adaptation that relates to provided practice. Having students study together gives them a chance to socialize, work together, teach, learn, and encourage each other. It is a great was to provide practice of content. All of these adaptations relate to progress monitoring, because through these adaptations the teacher can monitor the progress of each and every student.
