The second black cat only appears when the author is show that it is just a phantom of the author’s guilt of killing the first cat that comes back to haunt him when he is drunk. The author telling this story and constantly contradicting himself shows that the second black cat is a just an excuse for the author to escape the death penalty since crazy people don’t get executed when they commit crimes. Unusual properties of the second black cat tells the reader that the second black cat is not real and is just a figment of the narrator’s imagination. The properties of the second cat such as missing one eye, the transforming of its white fur on its breast into a gallows and it first appearing when the author is drunk shows the reader that the cat is unreal but is just a figment of the author’s guilt. The missing eye and gallows shows the author’s regret of maltreating Pluto.
