Dmitri Mendeleev
Dmitri Mendeleev was a Russian chemist and inventor. He was born in Russia, and taught at Saint Petersburg University. Mendeleev is most commonly known for creating the periodic table of elements.
Mendeleev was born on February 8, 1834 in Verhnie Arezyani, in the Russian Empire. He was the youngest of 11, 13, 14 or 17 siblings, depending upon which resource you look. His father was a teacher of fine arts, politics and philosophy. When his father became blind, his mother had to start working. When Mendeleev was 13 he started attending school in Tobolsk.
In 1864 when he was thirty, Mendeleev became a professor at Saint Petersburg Technological Institute and Saint Petersburg State University. He became a doctor in science. Mendeleev also got the city of Saint Petersburg internationally recognized because of his chemistry research and achievements. He resigned from Saint Petersburg University in August of 1890.
Other scientists had ideas that the elements were related periodically around the 1860’s, but Mendeleev actually discovered how they all related. Mendeleev decided to try to arrange the elements according to their chemical properties; he noticed patterns that led him to suggest his periodic table. On March 6, 1869, he made a formal presentation to the Russian Chemical Society. Mendeleev published his periodic table of all known elements and predicted numerous new elements to complete the table.
Mendeleev died on February 2, 1907 at the age of 72 from influenza. Some consider Lothar Meyer and Mendeleev the creators of the periodic table, but about everyone agrees that Mendeleev deserves the majority of the credit. Mendeleev is known for it to this day, and we still continue to study his techniques.
