Biometrics are automated methods of recognizing a person based on a physiological or behavioral characteristic. Biometric technologies are becoming the foundation of an extensive array of highly secure identification and personal verification solutions. As the level of security breaches and transaction fraud increases, the need for highly secure identification and personal verification technologies is becoming apparent. It can not be borrowed, stolen, or forgotten and forging one is practically impossible. A biometric system can be either an identification sys or a verification sys. Identification is a “One to Many” comparison of an individual’s submitted biometric sample against the entire database of biometric reference templates to determine whether it matches any of the templates. Verification on the other hand is a “One to One” comparison of two sets of biometrics to determine if they are from the same individual. Biometric authentication requires comparing a registered or enrolled biometric sample against a newly captured biometric sample. AIM 2. The aim of this talk is to present an insight into the world of Biometrics. SCOPE 3. The talk would be cov in four parts as under:- (a) Part I : Definition, Components & Working. (b) Part II : Types of Biometrics. (c) Part III : Advantages & Disadvantages. (d) Part IV : Mil Appls. PART I : DEFINITION, COMPONENTS & WORKING Definition 4. The word biometrics has a greek origin where “bio” means life and “metry” means to measure. Biometrics is thus the science of uniquely recognising and identifying humans based upon one or more intrinsic physical or behavioral characteristics. The characteristic should be universal, unique, permt, measurable & acceptable. Components 5. A typical biometric system is an automated system comprised of five integrated components:- (a) Sensor. It observes characteristics & converts the obsns into data that can be stored in elect form. 2 (b) Signal Processing Algorithms. They perform quality cont activities on the collected data & devp a biometric template. (c) Data Storage Component. It manages all of the data collected, incl data from the initial & all future collections and processing. (d) Matching Algorithm. It compares the new biometric template to one or more templates that may already be stored. (e) Decision Process. This uses the results from the matching component to make a system-level decision. Working 6. The operation of biometric sys can be organized into five discrete processes:- (a) Collection. The first step of a biometric sys involves an obsn or “collection,” of the biometric data through a sensor. (b) Conversion. The second step converts & describes the observed data previously collected into a template. (c) Storage. The system generally incl the capacity to store the template and/or the original collected biometric data. (d) Comparison. The newly acquired template is compared with one or more templates stored in the database. (e) Decision. This involves a decision process, either automated or human-assisted, that uses the results of the matching step to make a system-level decision. PART II : TYPES OF BIOMETRICS 7. Biometric tech available can be classified into two types as enumerated below:- (a) Physiological. This is based upon what we possess by means of biological characteristic. The various tech available are:- (i) Retina Scan. (ii) Iris Scan. (iii) Finger Scan. (iv) Hand Scan. (v) Facial Scan. (vi) Vascular Pattern Scan. (vii) Odour. 3 (b) Behavioral. This is based on what we do by our body. It incl the fwg:- (i) Signature Scan. (ii) Keystroke Scan. (iii) Voice Scan. (iv) Gait Scan. PART III: ADVANTAGES & DISADVANTAGES 8. Advantages. The advantages of Biometrics are as follows:- (a) Incr in security by providing a convenient & addl tier of security. (b) Reduce fraud by emp hard-to-forge technologies. (c) Eliminate problems caused by lost iden cards or forgotten passwords by using physiological attributes. (d) Replace hard-to-remember passwords which may be shared/ obs. 9. Disadvantages. Some of the disadvantages of Biometrics are as under:- (a) Privacy concerns. (b) Physical danger. (c) Misuse of info. (e) Theft. (f) Hyg issues. (g) Cost factor. (h) Acceptance. (j) Reliability. PART- IV : MIL APPLS 10. Certain proposed appls in mil / def are as follows:- (a) Access Cont. (b) Info Security. (c) Wpn / Sys Activation. (d) Trt Databank. (e) Biometric Iden Cards. 4 CONCLUSION 11. Biometrics is an evolving science and is here to stay. Biometrics devices are now readily available in the market, tailor-made as per our reqmts. Recent advancements in the biometric sensors & matching algorithms have led to a proliferation of Biometrics in a large No of civ appls such as Laptops, Smart Cards, Cellular Phones etc. Now the imperative is onto us to accept Biometrics as a significant, integral & undisputable part of our future lives. We need to learn to live with it, exploit it & optimally utilize it for a better tomorrow as it is undoubtedly the tech to be used extensively in the yrs to come.
