Places/Experiences/Notions of identity
Feliks Skrzynecki
Quote
Technique & Analaysis
Places
“Spent years walking its perimeter; from sunrise to sleep”
Extended metaphor - Feliks treasures his garden and empowerment is attained through his connection with the soil. Repetitious work and labour provides him with security and purpose - the feeling of belonging. Unable to seek belonging from the Australian culture he is surrounded by, Feliks finds solace and creates his won world in the safety / beauty of his garden.
“Loved his garden like an only child”
Simile – depiction of his connection with the land and the extent of the intimacy shared.
“ Swept its paths; Ten times around the world”
Hyperbole – demonstrates how belonging requires active commitment. It is not an easy feat but if one perseveres a sense of place can be gained.
“Talking they reminisced... about farms where paddocks flowered”
Connotations – highlights his continual connection with his homeland
Serves as a barrier to belonging in Australian society. It is readily accepted that with age it becomes increasingly more difficult for one to adjust or assimilate to a new environment. Therefore Feliks ever really “belongs” in Australia and he recreates his life with his garden, work and Polish friends – latching onto his past. Reminiscing reminds him of happier, uncomplicated times before the trauma of war & destruction of everything they knew.
Experiences/Identity
“Hands darkened; From cement, fingers with cracks”
“My gentle father” Stanza 1
“His polish friends” Stanza 3
Imagery is employed to show how his experiences have enriched his notions of identity. Differing experiences serves as a barrier to Peter belonging in the world Feliks and Felik’s friends share in.
Initially the connotation and possessive pronoun is demonstrative of the bond shared between father/son.
This is in direct contrast to the impersonal pronoun of ‘his’ is indicative of how he doesn’t belong to the world of his father & his father’s friends.
N.B: Ironically although Feliks has never assimilated in Australia he still feels a great sense of belonging and contentment in the little Polish world here. It is this very world that he has created which Peter finds himself alienated from – he is caught between two worlds.
“Golden cypress; Lawns – geraniums”
Jargon/allusion: the golden cypress and geranium plant is found in European countries. The lawn is a recognised Australian icon. The amalgamation of the two is a demonstration if how Peter is caught between these two worlds. The incongruity reveals the tension experienced.
“My father sits out the evening... Watching stars and streetlights come on”
“Happy as I have never been”
Imagery: Stanza 6 details Feliks Skrzynecki’s contentment through the use of imagery and conveys how he is obviously at peace.
Contrast/tone: the nostalgic tone reinforces the alienation felt and audiences detect the detachment experienced. Peter’s feelings are juxtaposed with his father’s and responders recognise that he does not feel the same degree of contentment. This is due to differing experiences and the persona evidently does not share in the same resilience which Feliks possesses, ergo, a barrier to belonging can be found.
