Film
Title:
Edward
Scissorhands
Release
Date:
21
March
1991
(Australia)
Director:
Tim
Burton
The
Film
Edward
Scissorhands
tells
a
story
of
an
isolated
individual
and
his
migration
into
a
suburban
neighbourhood.
Edward’s
ownership
of
scissors
as
hands
has
proven
to
be
a
great
adversity,
in
his
struggle
to
achieve
acceptance
and
a
true
sense
of
belonging.
Director
Tim
Burton
has
highlighted
the
idea
of
rejection
faced
by
individuals
possessing
strange
physical
characteristics
in
modern
society,
and
its
direct
link
it
has
to
immediate
judgement
of
that
person.
This
text
develops
an
understanding
to
Edward
not
belonging
with
his
lifestyle
as
he’s
living
in
a
distinctly
separate
world.
In
the
opening
scenes
of
the
film,
Burton
utilizes
the
effect
of
colour
combined
with
an
aerial
shot
to
represent
separation
between
Edward
Scissorhands
and
the
rest
of
the
neighbourhood.
The
single
shadowy
gothic
house
present
at
the
end
of
the
street
is
contrasted
with
the
symmetrical
and
brightly
coloured
houses
of
the
neighbourhood,
illustrates
that
there
is
a
severance
between
Edward
and
the
neighbours.
In
the
aftermath
of
being
rejected
by
the
community,
the
use
of
flashbacks
is
employed
to
depict
the
comforting
emotions
of
belonging
Edward
has
experienced
in
his
previous
life.
The
use
of
such
comforting
flashbacks
evokes
emotion
and
compels
the
audience
to
feel
sympathetic
towards
Edward.
Symbolism
is
also
used
to
emphasize
Edward’s
“Scissorhands”
as
being
the
greatest
obstacle,
preventing
his
acceptance
into
the
society.
To
find
true
belonging
is
a
difficulty
within
itself,
when
this
difficulty
is
amplified
with
further
complications
in
Edwards
case
“Scissorhands”
the
task
seems
almost
impossible.
The
ideas
presented
in
‘Edward
Scissorhands’
are
similar
to
Peter
Skrzynecki’s
Migrant
Hostel.
In
migrant
hostel
the
simile
“like
a
homing
pigeon,
Circling
to
get
it
bearings
”
creates
a
sense
of
the
migrants
desire
for
a
home,
a
place
of
belonging.
This
suggests
where
he
belonged,
the
‘circling
‘
suggests
an
accompanying
feeling
of
dislocation
The
text
challenges
the
human
attitude
and
openness
to
those
rejected
by
society,
suffering
with
disabilities
or
abnormalities.
By
absorbing
the
audience
into
Edward’s
alienation,
Burton
was
able
to
infuse
insight
into
the
negative
effects
and
the
excruciating
pain
felt
by
victims
who
do
not
belong.

Poem
Title:
A
Letter

Poet:
Quincy
Lehr
Published:

Seven
Towers,
Dublin
Date:
2008
The
poem
A
Letter
Home
by
Quincy
Lehr
reveals
the
challenges
and
isolation
faced
by
an
individual
moving
into
a
new
home,
away
from
any
family
or
acquaintances.
The
individual
seems
to
be
extremely
distant
from
society
and
almost
a
phantom
to
the
town,
“A
sense
of
some
exquisite
isolation.”
To
achieve
belonging,
the
individual
must
expose
oneself
from
hiding
and
social
disclosure,
by
overcoming
their
fear
of
being
judged
and
be
more
open
to
new
possibilities.
A
common
technique
used
in
the
text
is
similes,
Lehr
uses
similes
to
better
communicate
the
pessimistic
view
presented
in
the
poem
by
making
explicit
comparisons
to
off‐putting
circumstances,
an
example
of
this
is
‘Strained,
like
the
words
you
mumble
through
a
pillow.’
which
contributes
to
the
miserable
aura
emitted
by
the
poem
and
challenges
the
idea
of
whether
or
not
a
true
sense
of
belonging
is
in
reality
worth
achieving.
Word
choice
has
proven
to
be
a
well‐built
foundation
in
emphasising
the
message
of
isolation
in
the
poem,
for
example
‘inert,
intermittence,
and
isolation’
are
all
cold
words
which
present
an
idea
of
seclusion
and
the
inability
to
react
when
confronted
with
societal
matters.
Rhyming
couplets,
‘day,
away’,
‘outside,
hide’,
are
used
to
raise
the
level
of
appeal
to
the
reader
and
enhance
the
ability
of
the
reader
to
remember
certain
versus,
it
also
establishes
tone
and
rhythm
which
allows
the
poem
to
flow
more
smoothly
and
keep
its
appeal.
The
ideas
of
belonging
presented
in
‘A
Letter
Home’
A
Letter
Home
challenges
my
views
on
social
interaction
and
the
link
it
has
with
fitting
into
a
community.
To
achieve
belonging
you
must
not
conceal
yourself
away
from
the
opportunity
but
take
a
risk
and
embrace
every
chance
that
comes
by
you.
“To
form
a
slick
of
moisture
as
I
hide,
Behind
my
window,
staring
at
each
drop,
Just
outside,
yet
a
continent
away.”
The
message
conveyed
in
this
poem
has
positively
affected
my
view
on
the
journey
required
to
achieve
happiness
and
belonging,
and
that
each
offer
is
one
that
should
be
taken.

The
Newspaper
Article
‘Study
reveals
public
attitudes
toward
Hijab
wearing
in
Australia
shows
that
a
majority
of
Australians
are
supportive
of
the
Muslim
women’s
decisions
to
wear
traditional
Islamic
headscarf.
The
text
develops
an
understanding
to
the
belonging
of
a
culture,
religion,
the
individual’s
feel
they
belong
if
they
are
wearing
their
headscarf.
The
techniques
the
creator
of
the
text
uses
to
communicate
their
ideas
about
belonging
are
the
word
choice.
It
is
positive
and
negative,
such
as
the
words
‘
supportive’,
‘multiculturalism’,
‘shared’,
‘sympathy’,
‘acceptance’,
‘tolerance’,
‘assimilate’
and
‘positive’
are
all
word
in
which
they
feel
they
belong.
The
words
such
as
‘intolerance’,
‘objection’,
‘repression’,
and
‘prohibited
are
all
words
of
not
belonging.
The
perceptions
of
belonging
in
this
article
are
developed
similarly
to
the
poem
Felix
Skrzynecki.
In
the
poem
Felix
Skrzynecki
it
creates
a
sense
of
Felix
belonging
in
this
setting,
as
he
chooses
to
stay
within
his
boundaries,
due
to
his
experience
of
displacement
after
the
war,
this
has
led
to
his
chosen
state
of
positive
isolation
in
a
secure
place
where
he
can
control.
This
is
similar
to
the
article
whereas
Australians
seeing
the
Hijab
as
mandatory
for
Islamic
women.
They
also
see
it
as
a
representation
of
Islamic
women’s
repression
or
a
failure
to
assimilate
into
Australian
culture. Both texts communicate the idea that to understand the importance of places of belonging and to achieve the highest level of fulfilment, one must experience life with a change accompanied by a completely new environment.
The
article
challenges
my
thoughts
on
a
combination
of
belonging,
the
text
challenges
my
thoughts
on
exploration
into
new
areas
in
order
to
discover
true
belonging.
The
text
also
reveals
the
importance
of
each
individual
person.
The perception of belonging within a text can be understood when an individual challenges or enriches a community to which they are a part. Good morning
