My Beliefs, Values, and Clinical Gestalt With Individual and Systems Paper Elaine Waggoner BSHS/322 December 19, 2011 Connie Giles My Beliefs, Values, and Clinical Gestalt With Individual and Systems Paper A human service worker is a valuable asset in a community. “Preparing clinicians to be successful in their role requires on-going training and supervision” (Manners, 2008). It is essential that a clinician be knowledgeable and well educated in this type of work. Each community has its own problems and a clinician must know what to do when an individual or family is in need of help. After all, they are there to help people with their problems, and help them reach their goals. One has to be to incorporate their own values and beliefs with the values and beliefs of the human service organization. “Values, conveniently and in accord with received usage place things, acts, ways of behavior, goal of action on the approval-disapproval continuum” (Kluckhohn, 1952). It is very important to distinguish which belief and values will be of most benefit to our clients. We as individuals working for the betterment of our clients are the ones that will change the lives of many people for the better. My professional and personal work ethics when working as a clinician will be the same as being in the work field. You have to show respect for everyone and not judge them as a person, I listen and evaluate the problem at hand and look for a reasonable solution. I am very patient, and understanding and there are times when I can incorporate my own experiences into the conversation. I have helped many people with my advice and I know I would be a good clinician. Helping people is what it is about and I am very good at that. I do not let people’s problems affect my personal life. I have found you have to separate your work from your personal life. If you let it interfere you are not doing your job properly. As a clinician you need to be a good listener and be understanding of an individual’s situation. Showing respect will get you a long way and make a client feel comfortable. Once they open up and trust you the rest will follow and you will be able to get to the root of the problem. Giving the proper advice and showing your client you care about them and not just about the job will ensure that your client will try hard to meet their goals. After all we are all human and we each have our own faults and if your clients see you are not perfect they will feel comfortable enough to discuss their problems freely. You will deal with a variety of problems and we as clinicians have to make sure we can handle them and not be afraid to admit that we cannot. If there is a problem we should seek the advice of our supervisor or someone professional that has the experience to handle the problem. Always remember no one has all the answers we just do the best we can. There are many approaches that can be taken when dealing with your clients. Each one will be approached in a manner that you think is for them. These clients have many problems and how you handle them will determine if they will improve their situation. Sometimes you will have to be serious and other times cheerful it all depends on the individual client. Clients can tell by your gestures, emotions and the way you talk if you are genuine. Only then will they listen attentively at what you have to say. You will have clients with very little need and then there will be clients that will be more complicated. You will have to adjust your time accordingly and make sure that everyone gets your undivided attention. No matter what type of client you have such as aggressive or mild mannered you have to use the right approach. The more you know about a client the easy it will be to give them the help they need to accomplish their goals. I have many strengths and I pride myself with the tolerance I have for other people, I can tolerate anyone no matter how annoying they may be. I have learned throughout the year’s patience, tolerance and understanding are very important attributes as well as respect. Because of my life experiences I have become a stronger individual and I understand people better than I ever have before. I learned that not everything is your fault, life can throw you a curve ball and you need to stop and evaluate what is wrong and try to fix it as best you can. I am a very straightforward person and I do not believe in lying or covering anything up. I am very tactful when talking with an individual who is having a problem and I am not quick to judge. After all that could be me in that situation, so who am I to point fingers. In the past I had a lot of problems and I have learned from them, so I know how to talk to people. I can communicate effectively and honestly so the person I am addressing knows I am genuine. My weakness is I sometimes take other people’s problems to heart and I feel real bad for them. I need to try not to let my emotions get to me, and realize that I am here to help them and when I do help them I can feel good about what I have accomplished. I think the more I see clients accomplishing their goals I will be able to better control my emotions. I know that I am here to help these clients and what I feel does not matter, it’s how they feel that counts. I think the satisfaction of knowing you helped someone would be overwhelming. In my opinion anyone that is a human service professional is a very special person. It takes a certain individual to be able to handle the problems of so many individuals and families. Your beliefs and values which are important to you are equally important as a clinician. You have to incorporate your own beliefs and values into the beliefs and values of your organization. You have to believe in yourself first before you can believe in anyone else. When you realize this your whole attitude will change and when you know you have helped someone it will be an overwhelming feeling. It takes a strong individual to be a clinician and an even stronger one to admit when they make a mistake. So as a clinician we do not want to make mistakes that could cost a client everything they believe in, so we must be knowledgeable about our profession. Reference Kluckhohn, C., et al.
