Behavior and Ethics Fernando Emiliano MGT/307 October 25, 2011 Scott Earle Behavior and Ethics Every business is formed by some type of behavior and ethics. Organizational behavior and culture, diversity, and communication make up how an organization is operated. Behavior and ethics are based on human emotions, beliefs, and/or values. These factors are important because they determine how company policies and procedures are carried out. There is no way to control these emotions and they are constantly changing from day to day. Gender, age, and ethnic background make up the diversity that is present in any business. It can be beneficial to a company if used properly. The last step involved with behavior and ethics is communication. Once all other factors are accounted for, communication is the method used to deliver the message. Organizational behavior varies from one business to another. “Organizational Behavior (OB) is the study and application of knowledge about how people, individuals, and groups act in organizations” (www.nwlink.com). By observing organizational behavior, management can make adjustments amongst employees to improve efficiency. They can observe how well employees work with one another. Management can also look to find individuals who can move up in the company based on their individual efforts. One could consider organizational behavior as being the “big brother” of a company. It is closely related to organizational culture. Organizational culture is not easily defined. It can be considered “a system of knowledge, of standards for perceiving, believing, evaluating and acting” (www.au.af.mil). When one thinks of culture, it could be one’s surroundings which also include one’s upbringing. Culture in an organization also helps with the evaluation of employees and situations. It may not follow the company handbook but follow the norms that are practiced at a workplace. It could also be considered habits or generally accepted principles at a business. This culture could be changed at any time to adapt to new policies or situations. The more diverse a company is may make these changes somewhat difficult. Diversity is seen in everyday life as well as in the business world. Diversity can be considered, “the qualities, experiences and work styles that make individuals unique” (www.shrm.org). The United States is known for possibly being the most diverse country in the world. This makes for many diverse businesses. It is rare to enter any store or business that is not made up of people of many different ages, races, and beliefs. When diversity is used properly, it can be an essential tool in making important business decisions. A large retail store would be beneficial to use the diversity of its employees to reach different ethnicity groups of customers. This makes communication between customer and employee easier. Communication is used everywhere and all the time. Communication is used at home, in the office, and even online. It can be interpreted as information passed from one person to another. There are two types of communication when running a business. The first is communication amongst employees and management. The effectiveness of this communication is monitored by the way an employee carries out his or her tasks. The second type of communication is from employee to customer. The more informed a customer is when he or she leaves a store; the better an employee is at communicating. Organizational behavior and organizational culture are apparent in a retail store like Auto Zone. Employees follow most policies and procedures that are drawn out by corporate. As they do this they also make adjustments to fit any situation. The way this is done depends on the employee’s behavior or culture. An employee’s actions may be different when working in a group or as an individual. An employee’s background, even mood that he or she is in that day can make a difference in the actions that they take. The standards that an employee believes in also contribute to their decisions. Behavior and ethics are an integral part of any business. Policies and procedures are made up from these. Adjustments or changes are also made due to behavior and ethics. They are human beliefs and emotions that shape the way a business is run. The diversity of businesses also contributes to decisions that are made on a daily basis. Emotions and feelings play a big part in decision-making. Communication when done effectively can make sure that all parties involved knowledgeable about the issue at hand. Behavior and ethics will always continue to shape and form all businesses.
