Batman Year One Cory Williams The comic book story “Batman: Year one” was written by Frank Miller of DC comics and was illustrated by David Mazzucchelli and colored by Richmond Lewis, lettered by Todd Klein. This story was first known as “Year one” and was later referred to as “Batman: Year One”. The original issues (#404 - #407) came out in 1987. Plot This story takes place about 10 years ago and the perspective of young Lt. James Gordon when he first arrives in Gotham City from Chicago. He then joins the GCPD, working for Officer for Gillian B. Loeb and his detective Arnold John Flass. Gordon learns that the city is run by Don Carmine Falcone “The Roman”, he even had the police department on his side, Gordon started to feel the dishonesty of his fellow officers and became confused by how little the GCPD is doing in the streets. One day cops led by Flass were ordered to beat up Lt. Gordon, outnumbered Gordon went down with a fight. Later on when he got Detective Flass alone, he gave him the beating of his life, it was his pay back. Meanwhile Bruce Wayne “Batman” had returned from overseas with a change of heart, wanting to change the outlook and the injustice of this corrupted city. So he started training and working out, getting his body in the best physical shape. Bruce Wayne started off as dressing up as a homeless person watching over the streets of Gotham City. His mission almost ends in a disaster, after running into and angry pimp and getting stabbed and shot. Returning to the Wayne’s Manor Albert helps him with his wounds, then goes to sit in the study to goes think about how to approach his missions; suddenly a vampire bat hits the window. Then got the idea to have a new identity and came up with Batman. As the Batman he goes off attempting to stop crime once again, he begins to find that the most persistent nemesis was the Gotham City Police Department. One mission was to interrupt one of “The Romans” dinner plans with the Gotham’s elite, and tell them that he was going after them, and is cleaning up the streets. This unleashed a hate crusade against him. Officer Loeb then orders Gordon and other officers to kill “The Batman”. Gordon realises the plans of Batman and all of his intentions. A turning point in Gordon’s eyes was when he saw Batman risk his own life to save and old lady from getting hit by a truck. Then Sarah Essen a detective shot Batman in the leg so he ran to go hide in a building, then they ordered a helicopter to bring in some explosive to blow up the building, attempting to kill Batman. In the meantime SWAT teams are called up to finish the job. After the explosives go off the Swat team runs into the abandon building to murder Batman, luckily Batman had a sonic gadget that calls in all the bats from his cave to mask his whereabouts, and he escaped with the help of the distractions. The Police try to continue the pursuit but quickly realised he has disappeared. Months go by… Gordon and his wife have a baby boy in the month of October, one day Lt. Gordon when he was dispatched he was call out to investigate a bank robbery. Noticing something strange he decides to go back to his house, checking up on his wife and his new baby boy. When he got back to his Apartment garage he sees two cops kidnapping his wife and son, he was able to rescue his wife but the cops ran away with his child. During his pursuit to go save his son he shot Bruce Wayne thinking he was a thug so he can take his motorcycle to chase the kidnappers. Meanwhile Bruce gets up and steals a bicycle also chasing down the criminals. The kidnappers throw the baby off the side of the bridge, Gordon and Batman both jump over the side to save the baby, fortunately Bruce Wayne catches his son and returns it to Gordon. He then realises that he was the batman but because of his broken glasses he couldn’t quite make him out clearly when they spoke. Major Characters James Gordon, was a character that is constantly trying to make Gotham City better. As the story goes on Batman and him become an unknown ally, thriving for the same goal. James moved from Chicago. He was also a veteran in hand in hand combat. Bruce Wayne “The Batman” was the main character of this comic book series. His plan is to clean up the streets of Gotham city, and will do anything to make it a better place. Bruce Wayne is also an owner of a huge company, where he gets his gadgets from. Theme The main theme of this book is creating peace. These are achievable by Batman and James Gordon continuously stopping crimes and cleaning up the city one step at a time. This book was much better as I found there was more of a meaning. These two characters are iconic and will still continue to be as the series goes on.
