F.D.R Franklin D. Roosevelt had many visions of postwar Europe, he utilized his charm, wit, and the help of his advisors to push his ideas. Roosevelt used his imagination and character on how he could create a free and self-governing Europe. He worked closely with Winston Churchill, and not so closely with Joseph Stalin to try to lead the allies to victory over Germany and Japan. There were many different decisions that needed to made during World War II, Roosevelt and his cabinet had to make calculated decisions on each and every one of them. During wartime, America was pumping out more tanks and planes than any other country in the world. This was due to executive order 8802, which gave government jobs to African-Americans. Also, the U.S. broke many of Germany’s and Japan’ codes, and few of America’s codes were due to code talkers who were Navaho Indians. Franklin D. Roosevelt was as a charming man. Many people knew this, but also many people saw through it. As Charles de Gaulle said, “Roosevelt showed himself eager to reach a meeting of minds, using charm rather than reason to convince me.

Though he was charming and was nice as can be, in the winter of 1942 he felt depressed and disturbed. He tried to make everyone happy, which was very difficult to do. In 1941 he tried to keep India in the war to fight against Japan, he did this trying not to upset Britain, he failed and upset both countries. In the future, he would keep himself in a neutral stance on issues. He kept his opinion to himself when the question for a diversion attacks towards the Norwegian area or North Africa. Roosevelt also was viewed as naïve, he thought at one time he could trust Russia as he trusted Britain. One of Roosevelt’s biggest quotes of the war turned many heads. When he stated “unconditional surrender”, everyone was surprised, especially Churchill. Attention from the war focused on the United States after those two words.

Roosevelt’s main goal for the war was for, “the right of all peoples to choose the form of government under which they will live.” This was challenged quickly by the tow so-called of what would be France again, de Gaulle and Giraud. The plan was for Giraud to be the political leader and de Gaulle to be the military leader. This did not sit well with de Gaulle, he said, “Roosevelt meant the peace to be an American peace, convinced he must be the one to dictate the structure, that the states which had been overrun be subject to his judgment, and that France in particular should recognize him as a savior and its arbiter.” Roosevelt was looking to have power over any of the other big four after the war was completed.

From 1942 to 1944, Roosevelt dealt with many plans of attacks during the war. Things would continue to be delayed repeatedly. In 1942, American troops were having trouble in Tunisia were Hitler had sent extra troops to combat the Americans. Things were not going well for Roosevelt. He had hoped to meet with Stalin, and Churchill, but Stalin backed out. Roosevelt and Churchill met in North Africa were they named this place “Casablanca”. The American’s were out of sink at this meeting, getting the feeling of being a little disorganized, this was the last meeting the British had the upper hand. From here, the American’s would take control of the war. The two super powers planned for a cross-channel attack, though this attack would at least be a year away, possibly two. They planned to take back control of France, which was controlled by Hitler. In 1943, Nazi submarines inflicted serious wounds in the United States Navy. The plans for a cross-channel attack were falling apart due to shipping shortages. During these times of war, Roosevelt was imagining of reworking the boundaries of Europe. The cross-channel attack also sent fear up Churchill’s spine, this was because he believed Britain could not afford many losses of life. He was also not in favor of invading Sicily, which was Roosevelt and Eisenhower’s ideas. They finally got Churchill to agree, overtook Sicily, and began to invade France. August 17, 1941, the battle in Sicily was over. When Sicily fell, so did Mussolini out of office. From there under the new regime of Badoglio, the Italians decided to switch to the allies side. There were many questions about the faith of Russia and the fact that a mass grave was found near Smolensk. Roosevelt wanted to speak with Stalin in person, alone. Stalin also grew weary of Roosevelt because he felt as though he and Churchill had not kept him well informed about the happenings in France. This caused uneasy feelings between the two countries, leading to the desire for European control after the war. Finally, the three men met in Tehran, Roosevelt tried to become friends with the Russian leader.

He understood the peace of the world after the war depended on the two countries relationship. This did not exactly happen, there was a major conflict of goals. From here, Roosevelt ran for the President again, won decisively, continued on trying to cooperate with the Russians. They failed to meet expectations and agreements made during meetings that led to the Cold War. During World War II, the Japanese were breaking almost all of the Americans codes. Even Germany was beginning to intercept cables from Roosevelt to Churchill. They broke one cable that confirmed their ideas that Italy was about to trade sides. The armed forces had one answer for their problems, code talkers. Theses were Navajo men who spoke in their original tongue, or in a version of Navajo. This would allow the Americans to get the upper hand in the pacific.

This also gave the Indians and other races greater liberalism during the war. This showed the importance of accepting all races during the war. Not until recently have these men recognized, 29 Navajo Indians were given the Medal of Honor in 2001 by President Bush. In addition, a blockbuster Hollywood movie “Windtalkers” was made showing how the code talkers worked in World War II. Along with Navajo Indians, African-Americans made great strides during World War II. This was due to the shortage of labor, this moved blacks from the south to urban north cities during these times to find better jobs. One great step for civil rights was Executive Order 8802. Executive Order 8802 stated, “All departments and agencies of the Government of the United States concerned with vocational and training programs for defense production shall take special measures appropriate to assure that such programs are administered without discrimination because of race, creed, color, or national origin;” This gave rights to African-Americans that they had never even dreamt of before. This would be this first step to equal rights for them. This pushed America ahead of any other country in producing planes, tanks, and ammunitions. Which led to taking control of the allies, and the war. -X
