Baldwin, Harlem Hatred. People have hatred for a lot of different things. James Baldwin shows that there is much hate for Harlem even compares it to policemen. Its amazing how awful people are to the projects of Harlem. Baldwin shows plenty of examples from his language to his sentence structure. Baldwin goes into much detail about Harlem. "Harlem got its first private project, Riverton- which is now, naturally, a slum.." In this quote he talks about the first private project the reason for this was that the negros were not allowed to live in Stuyvesant town. Baldwin displays the details real blunt, start to the point. The people in Harlem knew exactly why the whites people discrimated them against because they believe that they are not good enough to live anywhere else. Baldwin does not ty to hint around his details he says it straight up and to the point. The language that is brought to this passage is common rhetorical devices. A few examples of some are simliars, personafication,logical even irony. "... the unrehabilitated houses bowed down" personifaction, "...naturally, a slum.." sarcasm. "they represent the forces of the white world, and that worlds real intentions are, simply, for that world's criminal profit and ease, to keep the black man corralled up here" irony; the irony of this is that the whites want to treat the blacks like animals but as they are getting controlled to treat others that way when really they are the ones being lead to by acting as if they were the animals. Also Baldwin uses repection of the word hated and asetation of no matter how many. The Sentences structure that Baldwin uses are diversed in different sections of the passage. At first he started off with short sentences which indicates an emotional or assertive tone then as the passage when on it the senteces started getting longer with more reasonable, suspenseful and even scholarly intent. The short sentences that he supplied us with were straight to the point, no question asked about what he was talking about or referring to because it was the simple explaintion. Once the sentences got longer the more formal it sounded. Baldwin used a mixer of both, he would go back in fourth with the to type of syntax. The repetion he uses to prove his point about the hate towards Harlem. Baldwin purpose of writing this passage was too show the hate of Harlem which he once lived but did not stay there. The reason for him letting others know was that he got our of there, the expections other had of him were proven wrong with him cause he got out of there and is now a educted man. His sentence structure is amazing of how he forms it and how it flows. The more rhetiocial devices he used the more it kept readers interested. The details given in the passage gives background knowledge to the topic.
