History Essay Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra Al-Haj was Chief Minister of the Federation of Malaya from 1955, and the country's first Prime Minister from independence in 1957.Tunku Abdul Rahman is widely known as the Father of Independence. The reason why he is known as that is because of his contributions such as getting Malaya its independence from the British. History and the world at large acknowledge his contributions as a statesman, a nation builder and as a singularly unique historical figure. Due to his hardwork and brilliant leadership qualities, Malaya (Malaysia) managed to gain independence from the british on the 31st of October 1957. The photo below, ( SOURCE 1) is a picture of our great prime minister announcing independence of our country. SOURCE 1 The journey to get independence from the British, was not easy. The effort for independence was led by Tunku Abdul Rahman, the first Prime Minister of Malaysia, who led a delegation of ministers and political leaders of Malaya in negotiations with the British in London for Merdeka, or independence along with the first president of the Malayan Chinese Association (MCA) Tun Dato Sir Tan Cheng Lock and fifth President of Malaysian Indian Congress Tun V.T. Sambanthan. ( SOURCE 2) shows the combination of United Malays National Organization( UMNO) Malaysian Chinese Association (MCA) and Malaysian Indian congress ( MIC) to form the Alliance Party. SOURCE 2 The Alliance Party managed to persuade Lennox-Boyd to agree on the Independence of Malaya. Tunku and Lennox-Boyd were men of integrity and sincerity and after negotiating, finally, on February 8, 1956 Tunku's fifty-third birthday, he and Lennox-Boyd signed the Independence agreement. Tunku and his mission left London on February 16, had a short break in Cairo and landed in Singapore four days later. Tunku then went to Malacca where he Had decided to make his first public announcement on their success. SOURCE 3 Tunku and Lennox- Boyd signing the Independence agreement on February 8, 1966. On August 31, members of the public began to file through the entrance gates of 'Stadium Merdeka' to witness the Independence ceremony. With his right arm raised, Tunku then shouted "MERDEKA!" and the crowd thundered "MERDEKA!" in response seven times. Then the Malayan National Anthem "Negaraku" played as the flag of Malaya raises. Joy swept over the country. Malaya ( Malaysia) had gained its independence. Tunku had dreamed of a near miracle and on August 31, 1957, he achieved it. A new multiracial nation was born and it would not have been possible if it wasn’t for Tunku Abdul Rahman, a National Hero. SOURCE 4 One of the greatest contribution of him, was in racial discrimination. Tunku Abdul Rahman used his first hand experience to deepen his conviction in fighting for equality and ignited his desire in making his homeland an independent state, free from British colonialism. This is why he is considered a national hero to every Malaysian. Below ( SOURCE 5) shows that Tunku Abdul Rahman managed to gain independence for our country by fighting for equality. SOURCE 5 The Reid Commission reported that Tunku Abdul Rahman and the Malay Rulers had asked that "in an independent Malaya all nationals should be accorded equal rights, privileges and opportunities and there must not be discrimination on grounds of race and creed." At that time, Tunku Abdul Rahman was the leader of the United Malays National Organisation (UMNO), which led the Alliance coalition. Eventually the Alliance would become the Barisan Nasional and Tunku Abdul Rahman later became the first Prime Minister of Malaysia. We will always be grateful to Tunku Abdul Rahman for everything he has contributed to out wonderful country. As stated above, he is truly a national hero, one that nobody will ever forget. We will always be honoured and proud to have had such a wonderful Prime Minister. Source 6, is to remind everyone of his greatness. SOURCE 6 Tunku Abdul Rahman.
