PREPARING TO TEACH IN THE LONG LIFE LEARNING SECTOR. Student name: xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx ASSIGNMENT 1 ELEMENT 1. 1. Explain own role and responsibilities and boundaries of own role as a teacher As a teacher the future of the learner placed in your care rest on you shoulder. The role of a teacher is always changing over time there fore as a teacher your need to stay aware of these changes. When dealing with learners depending on the circumstance you may have to play more than one role. They include the following PLANNER: its going to be your responsibility as a teacher to plan your lesson prior to. In order to have a structure when teaching. This also helps to to make best use of your time and deliver to meet the required learning outcome Role model: Because you are passing on knowledge and some times skills to learner, some of them will look up to you as their role model. It’s therefore vital that you portray the right image to them in order to avoid misleading them. This calls for a teacher to have acceptable morals. Identify the needs of your learner and try to meet them with in your means. This is the importance of always carrying out the initial assessment of your learners/. Because it’s during this time that you identify the needs of your learner and work towards meeting them. The teacher therefore has to treat learners as individuals and where necessary will have to refer them to the appropriate people if, the learners need is beyond their jurisdiction. The needs of your learners will also have an impact on your lesson plan and scheme of work. which will include their needs in order to realize the intended learning outcomes. Assessor: is the teachers responsibility to ensure that after delivering a session ,you find out whether the intended out come has been met by your learners. Also this helps to confirm whether their knowledge has been developed plus skills. This can be done through for example asking them for feedback after every teaching session to confirm whether they have learnt something or if you need to clarify more and change the teaching methods. Also as a teacher you can examine them by giving them a text at the end of the session to confirm their understanding. This helps you to confirm whether intended objectives have been met. Create learning environment for learners to learn. First of all you need to prepare before your class in order not to confuse learners. Its my responsibility as a learner to always ensure that I have all the necessary resources for example when my class needs gadgets for demonstration these need to be provided and set before the class begins. Also it’s to ensure that the class room is cleaned, seating arrangement doesn’t put any learner at a disadvantage, the ventilation is clear and the seating position is able to accommodate the number of learner that I have. All this helps to take away or reduce the risk of destruction which has a negative impact on learner’s ability to take in information. Also it’s my responsibility to do these for health and safety when the learners are in my care. As a teacher I have to know my boundaries in order to do a professional job and protect myself. These include not getting personal with my learners. Much as I have to be sensitive to their needs and problems, it’s important that I keep my distance especially when some thing is outside my jurisdiction. This is where referral is important through knowing who to refer complications on issues concerning leaners. For example learners who have personal problems that affect their learning I always talk to them, but ask them to speak to the student’s affairs manager. And in some cases when their problems are emotional I refer them to the counselor. 2. Identify Key aspects of relevant current legislative requirements and codes of practice with in a specific context I work for an organization which conducts different trainings for adults. As a teacher my work is influenced by the following legislations and code of practice Data protection and confidentiality while conducting assessments I come across personal information about my learners for example they provide me with information about their identity which could be misused if I don’t follow my organizations guidelines. For example some learners prior to starting the course has to meet the required criteria for them to be eligible for free funding; this means they provide me with documents such as passports or any documents regarding their stay in the UK. However some of them have immigration problems such as refugee or asylum seekers still waiting for response and such learners are mindful of who handles their documents. I however always reassure them about privacy and use of their documents for the intended use. And when these documents are delivered to the office they are filed and files restricted to users. Equality and Discrimination act. As a teacher my learner has individual back grounds, beliefs, religion, ethnicity and sex orientation. How ever despite all this, I treat them the same and don’t allow my personal beliefs pass judgment on them and therefore impact on how I treat them. For example one of my learners in their folder clearly indicated how they were gay and he freely talked about it during one of the lessons concerning regulations that are influence our work. I made sure that every one respected him for who he was and he got the same treatment from every one in the class including myself Health and safety act. As a teacher it’s vital that I read, understand and implement my organizations health and safety guidelines and follow general guidelines. As learners are in my responsibly when conducting my class it’s vital that I carry out a risk assessment of my environment removing all hazards that might impact on my learners. Create an environment that’s conducive for their learning. For instance before any class I always ensure that the class room area is neat and tidy free of any hazards. For classes where I have done the induction and initial assessments, I have taken the learners around making them aware of the fire exits, the wash room location and also briefly discussed with them how to maintain the area clean and tidy for the next users in order to avoid inconviniences Disability discrimination act. As a teacher all learners are to be treated the same. This includes learners that have any form of disability. Their disability doesn’t mean inability, they need to be supported but not discriminated against or favored against the rest. One of my learners has hearing disability, and learning difficult, but is very eager to learn and gives his work his best efforts. Every time we have a class, I ensure that he seats at the front and normally I use a reasonable tone not to loud for the rest. I encourage him to give examples in class. And every after a lesson we meet for an hour during which I find out whether he is at the same level with the rest. 3. Identify other points of referral available to meet potential needs of learners. As a teacher I always carry out the initial assessment of most of my learners. This helps me to know them on a personal level especially their individual needs before any class starts. That way I am able to incorporate their needs in my scheme of work and lesson plan. For example some with difficulty like attention span I’m able to use appropriate teaching methods like pictures to keep them alert or activities that are involving. How ever their instances where I am not in position to meet the needs of the learner and there for have to know the appropriate person in the colleague to refer them to. For example one of my learners during initial assessment I realized they had language difficulty , they were able to speak the language but not to required standards, but because we don’t teach English, with the learners concept I contacted out service partners who conduct English classes for individuals whom English isn’t their first language. And made time for the learner to attend the classes concurrently. This helped her to understand more, I also encouraged her to do a lot of practice in the class and after classes. Another instance was of a learner who had child care problems a service we don’t offer, yet it was affecting her progress, as some times she could arrive late for training or not appear at all. However with the help of the student’s affairs manager, I was able to locate with in the council child care services for single mothers who were interested in learning. I made the referral and the learner got the service. This helped her to make tremendous progress once the problem was settled 4. Identify issues of equality and diversity and ways to promote inclusion. Equality means to treat every one the same irrespective of their race, religion, beliefs and sex orientation. Every one should be treated with the same level of respect and dignity. In my class their learners whom under normal circumstances I wouldn’t agree with because of their beliefs. However I respect them for who they are and ask every one else to. Diversity is to acknowledge that we are all different with our own individual needs, personality’s beliefs and way of doing things. As a teacher I ensure that I identify these differences or individualities in my learner and find possible ways of involving every or addressing all their needs .this can be achieved through the use of universal methods that wont put any one at a disadvantage. This applies to my colleagues too not just my learners as they too will be different in so many ways, have to respect them and treat them with same level of dignity. This can only be achieved through not taking things personal when I’m doing my work as a teacher. 5. Explain the need for record keeping As a teacher I’m always following guidelines from the school and general guidelines from the teaching professional for best practice. I use different forms of records in my work these include Attendance sheets, before the start of any lesson, I ensure that I have a copy of this, which I circulate to the learners towards the end of the class. This document is important because a learner signing it is mandatory, which means they will have no choice but to stay in the class until the very end. Also it’s helpful because it gives me a clear picture on how many learners I have for administration purposes and preparation of resources. same document is also used for tracking purposes, for instance when a learners name isn’t on list this means they were absent for the class, and I’m able to contact student affairs manager who gets in touch with them to confirm their reasons for non attendance. Evaluation sheets. In order for learning to be complete, I need to get feedback from my learner on whether they have picked anything from my class, whether I was clear enough and any topics they need me to re clarify. Feed back also high lights things like resources that might be needed in my next class. For instance one of my learner indicated on the evaluation sheet how concentration was difficult because their was some noise coming through the windows. Closing them wasn’t fair they said for ventilation purposes. I picked this, discussed it with administration, during the holyday they were able to provide projectors with loud enough speakers. Progress review documents. These are useful as they show the learning journey of my learners, any areas that need improvement and how we will be able to achieve this through writing action plans. Also they include the support that I will give them. And if deemed necessary I will refer them to the relevant person. Initial assessment documents. These include details about the learner as an individual; these records have been helpful as they help me pick on aspects about my learner that will be used to include them in my planning of lessons. If the learner has any special needs these documents will highlight it from the onset and resources will be provided if not I refer them. For example, I had a learner whom during initial assessment, on one of the questions he mentioned how he had learning difficulty and would require extra support of about 1 hour every day in order to be at the same level with the rest. I picked this up discussed it with my supervisor and arrangements were made by administration for us to meet every time we had a class for his extra support. To also reaffirm this I asked him to ask for medical letter because his writing was difficult meaning he was behind with most of his assignments. He provided a medical letter from his doctor which I submitted to administration to justify what we were doing.
