Paper Towel Inquiry Lab Shayla Shigematsu Mrs. Nofzinger Chemistry 18 June 2013 Purpose: We are trying to figure out which paper towel soaks up most water because it’s always nice to know which paper towel brand you should buy because you would want to know which paper towel is the most effective. Hypothesis: If we use the ology paper towel it will soak up the most water because it is bigger and compared to “tuff” which is the same size, it is thicker as well. Materials: • Paper towel • Water Equipment: • Beaker that can fit 300 mL • Any beaker • Graduated cylinder Procedure: 1. Tear off one piece of paper towel from the paper towel roll 2. Fill a beaker with 300 mLs of water 3. Soak the paper towel in the water-filled beaker 4. Squeeze the soaked paper towel into the empty beaker 5. Ology worked the best for soaking up the water. 2 out of 3 of the trials we did proved that ology soaked up the most water. Compared to the other paper towels, ology soaked up at least 10 more mLs of water than the other paper towels. I think that there is a positive correlation between the cost and quality because the more the paper towel costed, the more efficient it was. The two most expensive ones were ology and sparkle. The ology paper towel sheets soaked up more than tuff even though it was the same size. And Sparkle soaked up more than nice and tuff even though it was only half the size of ology. I would recommend sparkle to people. Even though it doesn’t pick up as much as ology, it’s about 10 mLs away which is pretty close especially because sparkle is only half the size of ology. When we tested it the first time ology picked up 60 mLs of water and sparkle picked up 50 mLs and in the second, sparkle actually picked up one more mL and in the last test ology picked up 36.2 mLs and sparkle picked up 26.6. When we used the ology paper towel it picked up the most mLs of water because it is bigger in size and it is thicker as well. My findings did support my hypothesis because most of the trials proved that ology picked up more water than the rest. I think this lab is important to the real world because if you spill something big like a glass of water you can wipe it up maybe with one or two paper towels whereas if you use the other ones, you would have to use more paper towels which is a waste of money as well. One source of error is the amount of time we soaked it in the water. We didn’t time it we just put it in there and when it looked wet we took it out. I think that if you soak a paper towel for a second it will pick up less water than if you soaked it for 10 seconds. Another source of error that could’ve caused a mistake in the lab is that when we were squeezing out the paper towels some drops were going out of the beaker. This obviously impacts our findings because 100% of the water was being counted. And the last source of error that could’ve cause mistakes in our lab was that when we were using the paper towels to soak it, we were touching the towels while they were in the water which could’ve impacted out results.
