Artificial Intelligence Advantages & Disadvantages Blanca Ayala Strayer University CIS500 – Information Systems for Decision Making (Fall 2010) Dr. Theon Danet Artificial Intelligence Advantages & Disadvantages Artificial Intelligence simulates human intelligence such as the ability to reason and learn. Is considered the development of machines such as robots and security systems to perform the job of humans. AI systems can learn or understand from experience, make sense of ambiguous or contradictory information, and even use reasoning to solve problems and make decisions effectively. AI systems can perform such tasks as boosting productivity in factories by monitoring equipment and signaling when preventive maintenance is required. The ultimate goal of AI is the ability to build a system that can mimic human intelligence. In 1941, the most intelligent machine was an invention in the form of the electronic computer. Who would have thought 60 years from then that the same computer would be perfected beyond leaps and bounds and be used to control other machines, as well as be part of day to day living' In 1956, John McCarthy, considered the father of Artificial Intelligence, organized a conference where intellectuals gathered to learn of this phenomenon. This laid the foundation for the advancements in artificial intelligence today. AI systems has increased the speed and consistency of decision making, solve problems with incomplete information, and resolve complicated issues that cannot be solved by conventional computing. There are many categories, four of the most familiar are expert systems, neural networks, genetic algorithms and intelligent agents. This is a new tool to monitor the competitive environment, and the service is designed to meet that need. Today artificial intelligence is used in our homes and sophisticated establishments such as military bases and the NASA space station. In the expert systems category it play chess and assist in medical diagnosis, because they fill the gap when human experts are difficult to find or retain, or are too expensive. Companies like Citibank, Police Department, Fingerhut, Insurance Companies use neural network, since it emulate the way the human brain works. The types of decisions for which neural networks are most useful are those that involve pattern or image recognition because a neural network can learn from the information it processes. Neural networks analyze large quantities of information to establish patterns and characteristics in situations where the logic or rules are unknown. The network is used to review loan applications and create patterns or profiles of applications that fall into two categories: approved or denied or also for detecting credit card fraud. A genetic algorithm is an artificial intelligence system that mimics the evolutionary, survival of the fittest process to generate increasingly better solutions to a problem. A genetic algorithm is essentially an optimizing system: It finds the combination of inputs that gives the best outputs. Business executives, Investment companies and Telecommunication companies take advantage of this system. An intelligent agent is a special purpose knowledge based information system that accomplishes specific tasks on behalf of its users. Some of the advantages are: Machines can be used to take on complex and stressful work that would be otherwise performed by humans. It can complete the task faster than a human assigned to do the same task. The use of robotics can be used to discover unexplored landscape, outer space and also be useful in our home activities. Less danger, injury and stress to humans as the work is done by a artificially intelligent machine. Aiding of mental, visually and hearing impaired individual. It can be used for games to create a atmosphere where you don't feel like you are playing against just a machine. Less errors and defects are made when making decisions. Time and resources are not wasted but effectively used to achieve the end goal. Disadvantages are: Lacks the human touch, human qualities are sometimes ignored. The ability to replace a human job, this gives rise to humans feeling insecure and may have the fear of losing their job. Human capabilities can be replaced using a machine and therefore can foster feelings of inferiority among workers and staff. Artificial Intelligence can malfunction and do the opposite of what they are programmed to do. This type of technology can also be misused to cause mass scale destruction.
