Prideful Antigone
! Most of the time pride can lead into something very bad. It could even lead you to your own death. Antigone was written by Sophocles. Antigone, the main character, comes into conflict because of her obessive pride that she has. She takes too much pride in her family principles that led her to something very upsetting. Antigoneʼs pride is suggested by her will to die, her belief in to the gods, and her desire to bury Polyneices alone which ultimately leads to her downfall. ! ! The first example of Antigoneʼs pride is her will to die. In the beginning of the play Antigone said, “Creon is not strong enough to stand in my way” (Pg. 1023,35). This shows that Antigone will do whatever it takes to bury Polyneices. She doesnʼt care what Creon will do to her, even if she dies. Another thing that Antigone says is “(...) I am not afraid of the danger; if it means death. It will not be the worst of deaths-death without honor” (Pg. 1024, 80-81). This also proves that she doesnʼt care what happens to her. She just wants to follow her family principles and bury Polyneices. She wants to honor her brother. ! Another example of Antigoneʼs pride is her beliefs in the gods. In scene II of the
play Antigone says, “The immortal unrecorded laws of god (...)” (Pg. 1035, 61). This quote shows that Antigone follows the godʼs law. She does not care about Creonʼs laws. She thinks that the gods would think that itʼs the right thing bury Polyneices. She also said, “The dead man and the gods who rule the dead know whose act this
was” (Pg. 1038, 135-136). This also shows what she thinks is right. She thinks the gods law is right and she is telling Creon that the gods think it is right to bury him. ! The last and most important example that I think led to her downfall is her desire
to bury Polyneices by herself. Since Ismene, Antigoneʼs sister, doesnʼt want to help her she is going to do it by herself. She says, “For your words are hateful. Leave me my foolish plan: (...)”(Pg. 1024, 79). This shows that Antigone is willing to do it all her self. She thinks that the dead and the godsʼ of the dead will dislike Ismene for not helping bury her own brother. She also says, “No one will ever convict me of a traitor.” This proves that all Antigone wants to do is bury her brother. ! In conclusion, Antionesʼ pride led her into trouble. All she wanted to do is bury her
brother Polyneices. She didnʼt care what would happen to her even if she had to die. She was just following her family principles and wanted to honor her brother. She did not follow Creonʼs law, she followed the gods law. The only reason that she was put in the stone tomb was because of her obsessive pride in her belief in the gods, her will to die, and her desire to bury Polyneices.
