• The function of the peritoneum is to line the outermost layer of the wall called the serosa.
• The mesentery is a fold attaching the small intesting to the posterior body wall

• Food enters through the esophagus and it exits through the pylorus
Why are there 3 layers of muscle in the stomach'
• Because the stomach is a storage area for food and it is also a site for food breakdowns it needs these layers to move food along the tract but also to churn, mix, and pummel the food by physically breaking it down into smaller fragments.

• So that there is more surface area and the stomach can hold more food.
What is chyme'
• Chyme is what your food is after it has been processed in the stomach. It resembles a heavy cream.
What do chief cells and parietal cells do'
• Chief cells produce protein digesting enzymes (mostly pepsinogens). Parietal cells produce corrosive hydrochloric acid which makes the stomach contents acidic and activates enzymes.

• Food enters the small intestine through the pyloric sphincter.
