Homi K Bhabha. “On hybridity and moving beyond”
The Location of Culture (1994) pp1-9
Cultural theorist Homi K Bhabha describes the struggle and need for the world to evolve with the times and embrace the present. His writings are more geared towards a general understanding of the evolution of cultures but it pertains to art and therefore it is very relevant in the adaptation of technology into present day art forms. In Homi K Bhabha’s writings he describes this “Our existence today is marked by a tenebrous sense of survival, living on the borderlines of the ‘present’, for which there seems to be no proper name other than the current and controversial shiftiness of the prefix ‘post’: postmodernism, postcolonialisim, postfeminism…” He goes on as stating: “The beyond is neither a new horizon, nor a leaving behind of the past… beginnings and endings may be the sustaining myths of middle years; but in the fin de siècle, we find ourselves in the moment of transition where space and time cross to produce complex figures of difference and identity, past and present, inside and outside, inclusion and exclusion.” His understanding of the need to move away from conceptual and organizational categories is exactly what many media forms are trying to do but there is still a large gap between the old way and the new.
1. Seeing that most computer art/media is imitating tried traditional methods, should there be alarm or praise for the rapid advancement of applications'
2. What would be a good way to train young artists to learn both traditional techniques and programs so they may become savvy in both areas' Or should it be a split focus'
3. In the future of creative expression, what do you believe (knowing the advancement of present day) will be the next generation of creativity and media'
