Annotated Bibliography
Dube, Rebecca. “Toronto struggles with rising gun violence.” USA Today. NP, 2 January 2006. Web. 24 May 2010.
This article is specifically about gun violence in Toronto. The number of gun related homicides nearly doubled in 2005. Three cases of gun violence were stated. A 4 year old boy was wounded in a drive by shooting. A teenager was is shot to death at a friend’s funeral. And a gun battle between rival gangs kills a 15 year old bystander and wounds six others in the heart of the downtown shopping district.
The source is very useful, not just for me but also other people. The spike prompted a debate in Canada over what is behind the unprecedented violence.
My research paper is based on trying to persuade the idea of having a more effective way of forcing gun control in the United States. This article shows the awful nature of gun violence.
Wilson, James. “In defense of guns.” Los Angeles Times. NP, 20 April 2007. Web. 24 May 2010.
There are more than 260 million guns (of which perhaps 60 million are handguns) that increase the death rate more and more each year as gang violence rapidly grows. The shooting at Virginia Tech may tell us about how a young man can commit terrible actions when in possession of a gun. You can declare a place gun free, as Virginia Tech had done, and guns will still be brought there.
Like the other source above, this is a small example of why gun control is such an under-looked problem by the laws of the country we live in. Stronger actions need to be taken to make gun control more powering.
The article hopefully hasn’t changed anyone’s mind towards gun control. It needs to be looked at more. Guns are a threat to everyday life and to the community.
Vulliamy, Ed. “How a misfit’s hate turned into murder.” USA Today. NP, 25 April 1999. Web. 23 May 2010.
The images of this article can be disturbing as just the first sentence leaves you in shock and disbelief. A teenage gang’s fantasy of Nazism, devil-worship and hatred became brutally real when two members slaughtered their peers and teachers. Gun control is to weak on people. Teenagers are not of age to legally bye guns. Therefore, people who are of age can by guns for them. The 2 students held kids and teachers in the library hostage as the killed 12 students and a teacher before turning the gun on themselves.
This source focuses on just the one topic about the kids. The source is extremely useful with its visual effects on the reader.
It makes my argument almost impossible to find a positive thing about gun control being too lenient.
Paul, Jay. “Gun Control.” New York Times. NP, 22 July 2009. Web. 25 May 2010.
One of the amendments in the Bill of Rights is the right to bear arms. Many people have taken advantage of that over the years which has led to crime, man slaughter, and suicides. Gun control was enforced at its most when the assassination of RFK and MLK happened. Since then it has gone done as gun violence increased. In May, President Obama signed into law a provision allowing visitors to national parks and refuges to carry loaded and concealed weapons.
This source really attacks the issue of gun control decreasing in the country. With new laws helping that.
The article shows that congress and the president aren’t doing much to solve the problem of gun violence. In fact, the law passed is making violence more easily taken. This helps my argument about guns being a problem.
Porteus, Lisa. “Gun Violence in the United States.” USA Today. NP, 16 April 2007. Web. 25 May 2010
Thirty-three people, including the gunman, were dead at Virginia Tech on a normal day at school. It was said to be the worst mass murder shooting in American history. Students complained that there were no public-address announcements or other warnings on the campus until two hours into the rampage. Guns can be brought anywhere as long as they are hidden. Stronger methods need to be taken to make sure no weapons are brought to public places.
This source adds on two the other four sources above. It shows that gun violence is a major problem that cant be overlooked.
One major incident, like the massacre at Virginia Tech, can not be looked at with great worry, and then two months later, be forgotten about without taking any steps to preventing another incident like it. I stay one sided through all of this with my opinion being, we need to take a more aggressive approach on gun violence if we want to see another day of peace.
