Animal Farm Essay
Power corrupts, absolute power corrupts absolutely.
Power corrupts, absolute power corrupts absolutely is proven many times in the book Animal Farm by George Orwell. For example: The pigs were corrupt absolutely so much so that they resembled humans exactly. The farmer, Mr. Jones was so corrupt that on most nights would completely neglect the animals. Napoleon became corrupt by the little power that he shared with Snowball in the beginning, and thus evicted snowball from Animal farm so that he could have all the power, which meant he had absolute power and became corrupt absolutely.
In the case of the pigs there were many reasons as to how they became corrupt absolutely. The main reason is that they had the power to control every move that the animals of animal farm made, and were able to only supply them with the bare necessities that they required to survive and keep everything else for them selves. The pigs had all this power as well as the choice to use it, and they did. The pigs had everything they wanted, the house, beds, clothes, alcohol, and only gave the other animals the bare minimum. The pigs had as much if not more power than the humans, absolute power, and because the pigs resembled the humans in how much power the possessed they eventually began to resemble the humans physically so much so that “it was impossible to say which was which”. The pigs were corrupt absolutely so much so that they resembled humans exactly.
The farmer, Mr. Jones, had absolute power over the animals of Animal farm. Jones had controlled their food and water supply, he had controlled if they lived or if they died, he controlled when they worked, when they slept, he even controlled if they had babies. Mr. Jones abused his power over the animals by neglecting them time after time. “Let us face it, our lives are miserable, laborious and short. We are born, we are given just so much food as will keep the breath in our bodies, and those of us who are capable of it are forced to work to the last atom of our strength; and the very instant that our usefulness has come to an end we are slaughtered with hideous cruelty”. This shows that absolute power corrupts absolutely, because Mr. Jones had absolute power over the animals and chose to abuse his power by neglecting them.
Napoleon was corrupt absolutely, and had absolute power over all the other animals at animal farm including all of the pigs. Napoleon was once like snowball, but became corrupt by the power snowball and he shared, but being corrupt he wanted more power so he had to expel snowball from animal farm in order to gain more power. Once snowball was gone Napoleon has absolute power, and began minimizing the other animal’s, besides the pigs, rations, and extending the work hours of the other animals, even executed some of the animals for treachery with snowball, and making life for himself and all of the pigs a lot easier and gluttonous. “…a pile of corpses lying before Napoleon’s feet and the air was heavy with the smell of blood…”. Once Snowball was expelled from animal farm Napoleon gained absolute power, and became corrupt absolutely.
The pigs, Mr. Jones, and Napoleon all had absolute power and thus were corrupt absolutely. Corruption causes the powerful to become even more powerful and the hard working pay for it. Corruption is a phenomenon that can be encountered in any country of the world. No matter what the country is – poor or rich, democratic or authoritarian, big or small – it will not avoid corruption.
