Animal Farm In the book Animal Farm by George Orwell we can see that the animals are unhappy with their current lives and want to change them for the better. They feel the farm owner, Mr. Jones, is treating them unfairly and not giving them the life they deserve. All the animals work hard each day and they feel that at the end of the day Mr. Jones is giving them just enough food to survive. They feel they could all do a better job if they could run their own lives without humans. All these thoughts were gathered and together with Old Majors dream, they start the rebellion. In the beginning Old Major gathers up the farm and talks of how he had a dream of all the animals living together with no humans to control them. He sings them a song that describes his dream and when it’s over all the animals are extravagant and ready to join together. Old Major dies just 3 days later and a few of the younger pigs, Snowball, Napoleon and Squealer decide to call this rebellion, “animalism.” So late one night, the animals start a battle with Mr. Jones and they are able to overpower him and run him away from the farm. They now claim the farm as their own and change the name to “Animal Farm.” Now that the animals have the farm to themselves they feel their lives with only get better. The pigs tell the animals how they can read and write and start to take charge. They write up 7 commandments of animalism that all animals should follow and everyone agrees with them. Snowball is also helping the animals learn to read and write while Napoleon takes a group of young puppies to educate them in animalism. At the same time, Snowball is suggesting many good ideas to help better the farm. One of these ideas is to build a windmill. He tells the animals it won’t be easy and it will take time, but when it’s done they will only have to do a 3rd of the work each day. When he suggests this idea Napoleon has trained the puppies and he has them banish snowball. He claims it was because snowball was working with Mr. Jones and was against helping the animals but that is not true. But with snowball gone, Napoleon is now able to start his communist rule. Now that Napoleon is in charge, everything starts to change for the worst. He and the other pigs are starting to break the commandments. They are sleeping in beds and doing many of the things that humans do. They weren’t supposed to do anything humans did but as time goes on they become more and more like humans. The pigs start to take all of the other animal’s food and the animals are all starving. The situation just escalates and by the end of the story Napoleon is treating the animals worse than Mr. Jones ever had. Napoleon has begun to involve himself in trade with the humans and starts to be more and more like them. By the end of story the animals look and see that Napoleon and the other pigs have practically become humans and are now worse than Mr. Jones. So as you can see, the pigs thought that animalism would help to better their lives. The ideas were correct, but when Napoleon took over and changed everything, they no longer were doing what they planned in the beginning. Instead of all their work being split among the group, it was all given to the pigs. The pigs lived in luxury while all the other animals suffered. They would have been better off if Mr. Jones had never left.
