Outline
General purpose: to persuade
Specific purpose: persuade people to help PETA
Central Idea: I am here on behalf of PETA to persuade you to help us to stop animal testing in the United States.
I. It is well known that the United States people love animals since more than 60% of these people own at least 1 pet. 69 % own dogs, 51 % own cats, and 27 % own all other types of animals whether it is a fish, a bird, a rabbit, or even a snake. Imagine that your pet which you love and adore were to be put in a dark cold cage with no space no move and used to experiment on daily. Would that upset or anger you' I’m sure it would and unfortunately experimenting on animals happens every day in the United States. Up to 90 percent of animals used in U.S. labs aren’t counted in the official statistics of animals tested. Over 100 million animals are burned, crippled, poisoned and abused in U.S. labs every year. 92 percent of experimental drugs that are safe and effective in animals fail in human clinical trials because they are too dangerous or don’t work. On behalf of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals or PETA I would like to persuade you to help us stop this mistreatment and abuse of poor helpless animals that are tested on every day.
II. .Now what exactly is animal testing' Well it is the use of animals in experimentation to make sure that for example the use of a certain drug or cosmetic does not harm a human that uses it or how effective it could be.
A. Firstly, research using animals has diverse aims. Some researchers usually use animals to experiment on them. For example, investigate their behavior, simply just study the animal, investigate animal breeding and so on. Moreover, some experts claim that it can be beneficial to improving the health and well-being of people.
B. ‘In the late 1940s, polio crippled and killed thousands of people around the world every year. Today, the disease has been eliminated from most of the world only 16 countries worldwide have cases of polio in limited areas. Today’s children routinely receive a vaccine that provides a lifetime of protection from the disease which was made possible through animal research. Untold millions of people around the world are healthy adults because of these vaccines, which were made possible through animal research.
C. It is very clear that without such testing all of these procedures that save thousands of lives and elevate the pain of millions of people would simply not be possible.
D. Apart from that, it could be useful in military defense research. Ian Murnaghan states that ‘military defense uses animal testing for a variety of areas, including the development of weapons and vaccines.
III. What many people tend to forget are the millions of animals that are tortured or killed during the process of these painful, deadly experiments' Many people seem to misunderstand animal nature and the laboratory procedures and techniques that are executed on the animals. The procedures are cruel, unreliable, and harmful. Luckily there are more humane alternatives that have also proved to be less expensive.
A. Right now, millions of mice, rats, rabbits, primates, cats, dogs, and other animals locked inside cold, barren cages in laboratories across the country. They languish in pain, ache with loneliness, and long to roam free and use their minds. Instead, all they can do is sit and wait in fear of the next terrifying and painful procedure that will be performed on them.
B. Animals will be used in cruel experimentation for food, drugs, cosmetics, house cleaners, industrial chemicals, pesticides and consumer products which will leave them dead or suffering. Some animals in these labs become neurotic due to stress, sterility, and boredom and start spinning in circles, pull their own hair, and bite their own skin.
C. Many countries have banned the use of animals in experimenting but it is not the case in the usa. Many companies test substances to measure if they cause skin irritation, tissue damage, eye damage, and toxicity.
1. A test called the “Draize test” inorganic compounds are placed in the eyes of rabbits in order to see the damage they cause which is extremely painful for the rabbits which scream in agony when these tests are applied.
2. Another test the “Lethal Dosage” test is where a group of animals are forced to ingest poisonous substances until half of them die.
D. There is a federal law called the “Animal Welfare Act” that forces a minimum standard of care for animals in labs but it is excluded for 95 % of the animals especially mammals. There are also several agencies to inspect the facilities experimenting on animals such as the “Food and Drug Association” FDA and the “United States Department of Agriculture”, but there aren’t nearly enough inspectors to inspect all facilities and inspectors do not have the power to close down the facilities. So as a result most facilities come to pass the inspections even when they are not subduing to the laws.
E. A modern trend in research has occurred stating that results of animal tests are irrelevant to humans. Many scientists have accepted this as a fact and are working on ways to test for testing products and studying diseases that will help save the lives of many animals. Non animal testing is very cheap compared to its counterpart and takes very little time. Some of these test include,
1. “A 3-D in vitro (test tube) human "liver" that scientists can use to study the breakdown of chemicals in the human body. This technology effectively mimics human organs and can be used to test cosmetics, drugs, and chemicals”.
2. The scientists and engineers at Harvard's Wyss Institute have created "organs-on-a-chip," including the "lung-on-a-chip" and "gut-on-a-chip." “These tiny devices contain human cells in a 3-dimensional system that mimics human organs. The chips can be used—instead of animals—in disease research, drug testing, and toxicity testing”.
IV. What is PETA' PETA is an organization that fights for animal rights and is the largest of its kind with over 3 million members to it.
A. PETA works through public education, cruelty investigations, research, animal rescue, legislation, special events, celebrity involvement, and protest campaigns to try to spread as much as possible the knowledge of people towards animal cruelty.
B. PETA tries funding many different methods on researching diseases and studying products without the use of animals and markets these ideas to governments and research facilities.
C. Many people can help PETA in very easy ways but most importantly through donations. We need your financial support to put a stop to cruelty to animals Together; we can make the world a better place for all beings. Your donation will go to work instantly to help animals suffering and dying on factory farms and in laboratories, the fur industry and circuses, as well as other forms of "entertainment."
V. Mark Twain once said “I am not interested to know whether vivisection produces results that are profitable to the human race or doesn't. ... The pain which it inflicts upon unconsenting animals is the basis of my enmity toward it, and it is to me sufficient justification of the enmity without looking further”. So help us save as many animals as possible and put a stop to their pain and suffering..
