Every time a Bell Rings an Angle gets its Wi ENG 225 Hazar Shehadeh November 11, 2012 Abstract The film that I chose is “Every time a bell rings an angle gets its wings” Its from the movie it’s a wonderful life. It’s a typical story of good things happen to good people. The main character in this clip is George Bailey played by James Stewart, Donna Reed played by Mary Hatch, ZuZu the daughter played by Karolyn grimes. Clarence Odbody the garden angle played by Hendry Travels. It’s a story about a man who has given up his dreams in order to help other people. His attempt to commit suicide on Christmas Eve Shows George just how important he really is and what he really means to everyone. His Garden Angle Clarence is the one that shows George all the lives his has touched. Clarence is the angle who is brought down to show Georgia all the lives he has touched and how different things would be if he was not ever born. Clarence shows these things to George before he gets his wings. When the bell ring in the scene it is actually letting you know that Clarence has just gotten his wings. “The original story “The Greatest Gift” was written by Van Doren Stern in November 19, 1939”. (Sullivan, Daniel J) “The contention that James Stewart is often referred to as Capra only choice to play George Bailey is disputed by film historian Stephen Cox who indicates that Hendry Fonda was in the running”.(Sullivan, Daniel J)” At the suggestion of RKO studio chief Charles Koerner, Frank Capra read “The Greatest Gift” and immediately saw its potential”. (Sullivan, Daniel J) RKO anxious to upload the prodject in 1945 sold the rights to Capra’s production company Liberty Films, which had a nine-film distribution agreement with RKO for $100,000 and threw in three scripts for free “. (Sullivan, Daniel J) The movie was directed by Frank Capra. The job of a director is in charge of an activity department organization. (Wikipedia) It was produced by Frank Capra the screen play was by Frances Good, Albert Hackett, Jo Swerling, Frank Capra.Music was by Dimitri Tiomkin. Cinematography Joseph Walker the editing was done by William Hombeck. The movie was released on December 20, 1946 on a budget of 3, 180,000. “Although it was stated that Jean Arthur, Ann Dvorak and Ginger Roger were all considered for the role Mary before Donna Reed won the part, this list is also disputed by Cox as he indicated that Jean Arthur was first offered the part but had turn it down for a pior commitment on Broadway before turned to Olivia de Havilland, Martha Scott and Ann Dvorak”. (Cox, Stephen) Ginger Rodgers was offered the female lead, but turned it down because she considered it “too bland” In Chapter 26 of her autobiography Ginger: My Story, she questioned by asking her readers: “ Foolish you say” (Cox, Stephen)”The Cinematography determines exactly how we see it”. (Goodykoontz, B., & Jacobs) Elements of Cinematography go far beyond the mise en scene element of lighting. ( Goodykoontz, B., & Jacobs) I would say the shots that are used in this movie would be medium long shot. “Medium Long Shot is human figures are visible between head-to-toe and head to knee in the frame”. (Goodykoontz, B., & Jacobs)I know for actor lightning is very important. I always here that in some movie that I watch I would hear the actor who is playing a character in a movie fuss about their lighting. The lightning in “It’s a Wonderful Life I would say that they used is three- point lighting. Three point lightning “Style of lighting that has made both professional photographic portraits and Hollywood films stand out from newsreels home movies and amateur production for over a century”.( Goodykoontz, B., & Jacobs) This style of lighting is based upon careful control of shadows by using three main light sources. “Two are in front of the subject but on oppsite sides of the camera aimed at roughly 45 degree angles” (Goodykoontz, B., & Jacobs) I would say the shots in this movie were close up shots especially the scene where at the end where the younger brother came home and also the scene with George holding ZuZu the youngest daughter. The color of the movie is in black and white that is how all the color of the movies was then. “In 1990, It’s a Wonderful Life was deemed “culturally, historically, or aesthetically” significant” by the United States Library of Congress and for preservation in their National Film Registry”. (Cox, Stephen)I would say the clothes the character wore were more like everyday clothes something that regular people would wear in that day and time. I feel that costuming helps you relate to the storyline better. I help you to relate to the characters in the story as well. In the movie the costume look more like things that you would wear in the Christmas season. I feel that hair style and makeup as well helps relate to the character and the storyline better. I do feel hair style and makeup helps you know the situation of the character such as if they are rich or poor. In this case I would say that In it’s a Wonderful Life George and his family are poor and the is the costumes one can say is of a poor family. In this movie I would say that the elements in this movie work together. In a harmonious and I feel that the scene discordant and the design elements are corguenth with what the film vision is trying to say. I believe the point that they were trying to make come across clearly to all its viewers. References Goodykoontz, B., & Jacobs, C. P. (2011).
