WARDS simulating Urinalysis Lab I. Purpose and Hypothesis: The purpose of this lab was to test four different “urine samples” (chemicals) and analyze the results. We were to observe our observations and try to see if there were any possible disorders according to the pH and crystl type. II. Procedure: The procedure was very simple to follow. 1. Retrieve 10 mL of each simulated urine sample in the medicine cups. 2. List the physical characteristics of each urine sample (note the color, clarity, and smell) and record on graph. 3. Next test for pH, get 4 pH test papers and place a pH strip into each of the urine samples. Leave in the urine sample for 30 seconds and remove. 4. Complare the color to the pH color chart and record the pH of that urine sample. 5. Next test is testing for sugar. 6. Place 250 mL of wter into a large beaker (400 mL). 7. Turn on hot plte to High 8. To each test tube, add 3 mL of a urine sample and 3 mL of the benedict solution. 9. Place tube in the hot beaker and let it boil for 2 minutes. 10. Remove and note the color of the urine sample. 11. Repeat for all tests. 12. Testing for Protein is the next test. 13.Remove 3 mL of each urine sample and place in different test tubes. 14. add 1 mL of Biuret solution and record the color change. III. DATA: See attached sheet IV. Results and Conclusion The reults obtained from the lab were interesting. It was difficult trying to figure out which patient had which disorder. QUESTIONS: 1) I feel that Jeff Jones has diabetes. I think this because common symptoms of diabetes match Jeffs’ symptoms: he has an increased urine output, increased appetite, and has great thirst. 2) I feel Mr. Thompson has parachymal. He has red blood cells in his urine which is a big sign. 3) Mrs. Smith has glomerulonephritis. She had a high number of white blood cells and a high acidity level (pH). 4) Its important to make sure you are testing the actual urine and not some other chemical. It will give you the most accuarate test. 5) It tells you one of the functions produces different hormones. 6) They are serious because the kidneys are responsible for getting rid of the wastes in your body (urine) and reabsorbing water. Without the kidneys there would be no way for the toxins in our body to be released. 7) No, the physician should call the patient to have a urine sample done to see what is wrong in there kidneys then make a prognosis. If needed, he could run more tests or give the patient some antibiotics. 8) To make sure you are nto skipping over any symptoms. Doctors can read a test but if they don’t look at the physical characteristics they could be skipping over something important. 9) Another use of urinalysis is pregnancy testing. There is a hormone that is relaeased when a woman is pregnant. It usually occurs 8-10 days after fertilization.
