There are so many reasons in life about why people do something. They do work, do school, and though do sleep, because they have needs. A need is something that is necessary for humans to live a healthy life. People have their own motivation to fulfill their needs. Human needs are unlimited because they never feel satisfied with everything they have got. Some people do everything to fulfill their needs though it gives bad effect to others. Maslow has set up a hierarchy theory of needs. This theory is divided into five levels of basic needs. There are physiological needs, safety needs, needs of love and belonging, needs for esteem, and self actualization. In the levels of the five basic needs, the person does not feel the second need before the demands of the first have been satisfied or the third before the second has been satisfied, and so on. According to the third level of Maslow’s hierarchy theory of needs, Olga is a young woman who always needs of love in whole life in The Darling, one of Chekhov’s finest short stories in Russia, was first published in 1899. First, she loves her father as a daughter. When she is at school, she is falling in love with her French teacher and also with her aunt who used to come every year. The problems in this short story are shown up when the story begins when Olga is sitting on the little porch waiting for Mr. Right, lost in thought, until the end of the story. Olga’s character is unique and interesting to discuss. This story, The Darling presents how a woman, named Olenka, the main character, who is also, in this story, known as the darling, has reliance on others and most of her life is empty. Olenka does not posses any personality of her own; therefore, she only finds happiness in reflecting the belief of her husbands or lovers. Olenka has the need to be fond of someone, and she frequently fills her empty life through others. This woman, Olenka, nicknamed “Darling” is compassionate, gentle and sentimental. She is a woman with no thought or an opinion of herself. She only has an opinion or thought in relationship with someone she loves. Moreover, her opinion is based on her lover’s opinion. All of her opinions, ideas, and thoughts in the past will change when she gets the new one. In this story, Chekhov wants to show what woman ought not to be. Olga first marries a theater owner and adopts his despair over the weather and his disdain for the public, who do not appreciate his art. When he dies suddenly, Olga mourns bitterly, but three months later she meets a timber merchant. They quickly marry, and Olga only talks and dreams of timber. After six years, the timber merchant becomes ill and dies suddenly. Olga mourns his death bitterly, but six months later she takes up with a young veterinary surgeon, Smirnin, who stays in her lodge. Although he is married, he is estranged from his wife. During this time, Olga speaks and thinks only of veterinary concerns. But this does not last long, as the surgeon is soon transferred to another town, Olga is absolutely alone. When Olga is once again left without a man in her life, she finds that she has nothing to say or think. Years go by, and Olga grows older and less attractive, as she thinks, dreams, and speaks of nothing. Only when the veterinarian returns with his wife and son, Olga’s life once again takes on meaning. It is Sasha, the little boy, who becomes the focus of all her thoughts. When he is virtually abandoned by his mother and father, Olga takes the boy under her care, as if he is her own.
