Theory Task 4 Prompt sheet
Analyse different ways in which you would establish ground rules with your learners, which underpin behaviour and respect for others.
“Good classroom management skills are essential to the smooth and efficient running of any classroom” (Joe Budden, March, 2008).
In multi-skills we are using the following ways to introduce ground rules:
1. Compact drawn by education provider
A compact includes all the ground rules set up by the prison that the men have to respect while they are in the workshop.
Our compact covers areas such as health and safety, equal opportunity, behaviour towards other learners and members of staff and consequences for not following the rules set by the compact.
A compact is a very useful since it will detail carefully all the ground rules. Besides the learners have to sign it and therefore it becomes an official for the prison and the staff to refer to in case of problems with a learner.
2. Contract or written rules drawn by learners on flipchart
A contract drawn up by the learners will be discussed at the onset of the course during the induction and will require the learners to reflect on what rules they think are to be followed while on the course.
In such a contract, ground rules such as “no swearing”, “arriving in time”, “wearing the appropriate clothing” and “only one person (teacher or learners) speaking at anytime during explanation” can be introduced.
By using a flipchart, the rules can then be displayed in the workshop and some alterations can be made as the course goes along. Also by allowing the learners to have some input into what ground rules to follow they will be more compliant.
3. Verbal rules
Ground rules can be presented verbally at the beginning of the course in conjunction with the compact.
Only the main ground rules will be presented verbally such as the non-smoking policy.
By presenting some of the ground rules verbally it allows those who have difficulties in reading or who are from different ethnic backgrounds to understand what is expected from them.
