An explaination of what is meant by Diversity, Equality and Inclusion.
Diversity.
The dictionary definition of diversity is; having or being composed of different elements: variety. a range of different things*. Within a childcare setting we take it to mean that each and every individual is unique, and recognise our individual differences. These can include but not exhaustive: race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, socio-economic status, age, physical abilities, religious beliefs, political beliefs, or other ideologies.
Equality.
The dictionary definition of equality is; The condition of being equal in number or amount; the state of being equal especially in status, rights or opportunities*. The basis of equality means equal rights for all people regardless of factors which they may have that are different.
Inclusion.
The dictionary definition of inclusion is; the action or state of including or of being included within a group or structure "the inclusion of handicapped students". ; A person or thing that is included within a larger group or structure.*
Educational inclusion is about providing equal opportunities for all learners, whatever their ability, age, gender, ethnic origin, religious belief, impairment, status, sexuality, or social or economic background. What matters are the provisions made for succeeding.OfSTED now uses the phrase "educational inclusion" to cover all the following
groups:
- Girls and boys, men and women
- Black and minority ethnic and faith groups
- Travellers
- Asylum Seekers and Refugees
- Learners with "special educational needs"
- "Gifted and talented" learners
- Children “looked after” by the local authority
- Sick children
- Young careers
- Children from families under stress
- Learners at risk of disaffection and exclusion

Discrimination is based on prejudice assumptions of group characteristics rather than an individual judgement.
Effects of discrimination:
A child when treated with discrimination at home or work setting faces many educational and social difficulties in life. A few of them are listed below:
Violence
Low self-esteem
Lack of confidence
low self worth
Embarrassment
Withdrawal
Feels neglected and scared
Lack of interest
Lose identity
Bullying
Feels inferior
These outcomes from discrimination might have a long term effects on the child’s social, emotional and educational growth.
An explanation of how inclusive practice promotes equality and supports diversity.
Inclusion is a sense of belonging: feeling respected, valued for who you are. feeling a level of support and commitment from others so you can do your best work.
Every child has the right to be include
By using the principle that inclusion is a right for all children, early years settings can make sure that every child:
has an equal chance to learn and develop
participates equally in activities
is given the opportunity to communicate in their preferred format
has their individual needs known and met
feels safe and know they belong
is valued as a unique individual and
feels strong and confident about their identity.
