Amir’s Ambivalence October 10, 2011 Amir’s Ambivalence The author Khaled Hosseini writes the book The Kite Runner. In the book The Kite Runner one of the charecters Amir shows ambivalence between Hassan and his father Baba. Some ways Amir shows his ambivalence is during the kite tournment, Baba’s thoughts about Amir, and Amir asking Baba for new servents. These events show Amir’s conflicting emotions between Hassan and Baba. One of the events of Amir’s ambivalence is the kite tournment. Amir has entered a kite tournment with Hassan and the two won the tournment which made Baba very proud. Amir felt happy that Baba showed that he was proud of him when he won the tournment. After the tournment Amir wanted to show his dad the winning kite to show off Amir and Hassan victory, but after the tournment Hassan kept the kite and told Amir that he will meet him later to give to Amir. When Amir went looking for Hassan to get the kite, Amir witnessed Hassan being rape. While witnessing this shocking event all Amir could think about was the kite to show his father. Amir said that the Kite was the ket to Baba heart. He didn’t even consider helping Hassan all he wanted to do was win his father’s acceptence. Hassan was always the person who spent time with Amir and did everything he could to help Amir but in his time of need Amir could not do the same because Amir valued the thought of love Baba would show him if he had the kite. Once Amir got home and showed Baba the kite Baba imbrace Amir in his arms. When Hassan got home Amir acted as if nothing happen. Baba asked Amir if it’s something wrong with Hassen but Amir said that he was just sick. For a couple of weeks Hassan was very depressed after the rape but Amir did nothing to help Hassan because Baba was finally paying attention to Amir. Another event that goes on throughout the book is Baba’s thoughts about Amir. Baba thinks Amir is weak. Amir always has Hassan to stand up for his battles and Baba doesn’t like the thought of Amir wanting to become a writer. Baba once said, “if I’d didn’t deen you come from my wife I would think you where my son.” Amir tries so hard to find ways to impress Baba. One day Amir wanted to show Baba a story he wrote but Baba just ingored him. Amir was disappointed that his father did care like Hassan and Rahim Khan who thought his story was amazing. When Rahim Khan wrote Amir a note “bravo” to him he wished that Rahim was his father. Amir wants a father figure in his life to show that they care about him and his talents. Last event that shows Amir Ambivalence is when Amir asked Baba can they get new servents. Amir asked Baba to get new servents because he felt guilt about witnessing the rape of Hassan. Hassan still wanted to spend time with Amir even after the raping but Amir could take being aroung him to long because all he could see was the bloody pants and face Hassan had during the time of his rape. All Hassan wanted to do was be loyal to Amir and Amir just wanted him gone away from his eye sight for good. When Amir asked his father about getting new servent Baba got really upset that Amir would even ask such a qustion and almost struck Amir. After Baba’s disapproval of new servents Amir thought of a way to get rid of Hassan by putting some of his birthday gift in Hassan room. After putting the gifts in Hassan room Amir told Baba that Hassan had took his things. Hassan and Ali was comforted about the gift being in their headquaters and Hassan had said he took them even thou he didn’t. Hassan and Ali wanted to leave the house and for the first time Amir saw Baba cry, begging the two not to leave. Amir shows ambivalence by not being concerned about Baba’s feelings about getting new servents because he wanted to get rid of Hassan because of his guilt he had of witnessing him getting raped and not doing anything about it. The three events that showed Amirs ambivalence are the kite tournment, Baba’s thoughts about Amir, and Amir asking Baba for new servents. These events showed the conflicting emotions he has between Hassen and his father Baba. Amir seems to always try hard to impress his father Baba. Amir seems to put Hassen his servent who has loyality towards him no matter what Amir does to him. Amir felts Hassen can be considered his friend and care for him in some ways but when Hassen needs help from Amir, Amir puts Baba thought of acceptence first.
