Timothy J. Silvey Soc/105 08/11/2010 Daniel Jette Today's American pop culture has been greatly influenced by the baby boomers who were the first generation raised with television. Though the boomers are entering their 60's, their music is still played on the radio frequently. "I think it's a music that challenges us to think about what America is in ways we both do and don't want to do," said Craig Werner referring to the baby boomers. The younger generation. Companies have generally been using mass media as a source of communication to let a large amount of people know about their products and this allows great ideas to be shared with everyone. However, as time passes the sophistication of the advertising methods have become more advanced and created consumerism needs to target luxuries and turn them into necessities. Today's media must address some current problem in the society or reflect upon American life and different ways of living it.   This creates a lot of stereotypes that manufactures such as Abercrombie and Fitch as well as Calvin Klein use to make their products more enticing to the public. These companies use young models and provocative advertisements flaunting adult sexuality and creating an image of a perfect image. The majority of today's models are young and extremely thin or muscular and it creates an image that only this is the way we all should look. This affects a large portion of people who do not believe that they are perfect and creates a extremely unhappy outcome causing people to ignore their own personal goals for themselves. Television greatly affects the way the general public of the American society views itself. Numerous television shows describe certain ways of living and a large portion of people follow in the same style of life. Sponsors use specific settings to promote the public's buying ideas. Our need as a society for the television and everything it has to offer creates a large amount of work. There are other broadcasts and shows that help the justice system by offering identifications and descriptions of people who are wanted by the law.    All of our society uses some source of gathering what is going on in the world around us. Often time the news will encourage certain products to buy or to not buy due to different types of qualities or recalls. In itself this encourages comfort to our society knowing that we have a method to know what is going on in different situations. Our need to know about our society creates a large amount of jobs for our population and generates feelings of happiness or a sense of purpose. There are people who have passions for our right to know what is going on around us and there are those who greatly appreciate their dedication. The news creates a sense of responsibility and a definite knowledge of right and wrong. Most stories are based off of the moral wrong doings of our society and it is individuals. The news also tells about different types of health risks and ways to avoid certain problems in health telling about what is good to ingest for certain conditions and so forth. Thus influencing a certain way to live in order to each different type’s of goals.  News broadcasts also inform people about people who are wanted by the law and ask for help from the public watching allows justice to be served in a more efficient manner.   Television also offers an extremely efficient method in which to advertise certain products or services. This offers a visual image that stimulates people to want to have what ever the advertisement is describing. This allows marketing companies to more easily achieve the goals of their clients and stimulates more work for not only the marketing agency itself but for the clientele as well. Some advertisements are meant to influence people to become more responsible in their health, their social behaviors, and the general safety of our society. While other advertisements are there to insure the safety and reliability of those responsible for the justice in our society by offering methods to overcome problems and to ask for help in others. There are also advertisements offering medications for depression and anxiety that discourage a general sense of happiness. These medications promise to influence a basic personality change and relief to agonies that might be affecting the individual's moods.   In conclusion, electronic media has a huge impact on the social culture of our society. In many different ways this media directly influences different styles of living and offers means of help for almost any situation. Television causes different stereotypes to arise, helps to inform our society about important news, and helps our working society advertise what they have to offer the rest of us. Music from generations ago is still listened to on a regular basis and this too influences our society to be a certain way.
