Bobby Nichols 10//27/10 Definition Essay The American Dream Since this country started back in 1776 there has been talk and speculation of what the American dream is. Some say it’s the freedom to come and go as you please, some say it’s the ability to come here and make a living for yourself, others have that picture in their mind of the American dream as a picture of the house with a white picket fence and a perfect spouse, kids and a dog in a nice neighborhood. I believe that it is the combination of all these. James T. Adams who first came up with the concept of the American dream said “It is not a dream of motor cars and high wages merely, but a dream of social order in which each man and each woman shall be able to attain to the fullest stature of which they are innately capable, and be recognized by others for what they are, regardless of the fortuitous circumstances of birth or position.” The American dream is what people all over the world come here to live up to and bye. The founding fathers that fought so hard for our country did so because of their believe of what they saw as the American dream of back then. The American dream is the concept of freedom and I personally think that our govement has forgotten all of this and needs our concept of the American dream to be brought back into their concepts as I truly believe they have lost sight of the American dream. The American dream is changing from generation to generation because the concepts of society are changing from generation to generation and so as these concepts are changing the American dream is changing thus, what was the American dream 50 years ago won’t be the same today or will the American dream of today be the same as the American dream as of 50 years from now. The American dream is something that will always be alive even if our government think it is dead.
