Over the past few years, the American Dream has become harder to achieve. It may not be possible for every person to live the American dream. “Two-thirds of the American people say the American Dream is becoming harder to achieve, especially for young families, and they point to financial insecurity and poor quality public education as the most significant barriers, according to a new survey released by the National League of Cities (NLC).” All of these barriers point to factors that the government has power to change. According to this survey, the government plays a big role in failing to live the American dream. “A survey, conducted in August [2004] by KRC Research, found that more than one in three Americans feel that they are not living the American Dream and nearly half think it is unattainable for them. The survey also shows considerable growth in the number of people who say government makes it more difficult to achieve the American Dream.” All levels of government need to work together to help families live the American Dream. Whether the government plays a role in achieving the American Dream or not, there has to be effort in the families trying to live it. Overcoming the obstacle that gives everyone access to the American Dream is the most important step in achieving it, because it is our own choices that allow us this freedom. Big or small, short term or long, anyone can achieve their dream with dedication and commitment. Even with a thousand different meanings, the American Dream is available to anyone who is willing to never give up. Whether you have troubles as a kid, as an adult, as a parent, or employee, these obstacles can be overcome with time and hard work. “A successful life is one that is lived through understanding and pursuing one's own path, not chasing after the dreams of others.”
