RESEARCH ON THE EXISTENCE, THEORIES AND ORGIN OF CROP CIRCLES Have you ever wondered whether or not we are alone in the universe' What if there are higher beings or beings from other worlds looking upon us' We dwell on one of the many planets that make up our universe. It is not beyond reality that one of our sister planets maybe home to another civilization. It might be possible that the inhabitants of those planets are trying to communicate with us through the mysterious geometric formations found in fields of crop around the world. The amazing and unexplained existence, origin and theories behind crop circles are among the most popular issues in the world today. Crop circles are geometrical formations made mostly in grain crops through flattening, where the flattened portions form patterns that were non-existent in previous days. They have been discovered in the fields of several countries across the world. The most popular fields for the discovery of crop circles include rye, corn, wheat, soy and barley. Crop circles are not a new phenomenon. They have been around for centuries. The earliest discovery of crop circles dates back to the 17th century. The first noted discovery during that century was in a wood cut called “The Mowing Devil.” “It depicts a devil-like creature cutting out a pattern in a crop with a scythe. The woodcut has text, which told of a greedy farmer, who, having refused to pay a mower a reasonable rate for reaping his oats, swore that he would rather have the Devil do the work. The very following morning, the farmer awoke to find his crop had been harvested, but done so in such an amazing manner, with rounded circles of incredible exactness that no human could have done the same within the period and darkness of one night. The farmer was so afraid that he could not enter the field to collect his harvest.” (Crop Circles) During the 20th century, the crop circle phenomenon became very popular. Most discoveries in the 1970’s were generally in England. Because of this, it was thought that crop circles were indigenous to the U.K. As time passed, there were new discoveries of geometric patterns in the fields of the Unites States of America, South Africa and China. By the late 1990’s, there were numerous formations discovered across the world. “1990 began early with a surprise at Bishops Cannings. Two Celtic cross designs with pencil-thin rings stood parallel in the wheat field. Amazingly, one had a fourth ring that intercepted the other. This addition of elements also began occurring in other formations.” (The Crop Circular) Every year, numerous crop circles are discovered. Thousands have been documented around the world. From past to present, researchers have been studying crop circles and developing theories on how crop circles are created. In order to make a design, the crop has to be laid flat in such a way that a pattern develops. These designs or patterns are done with such precision that the crops are still able to grow even when they are woven or flattened together for long periods of time. “In genuine formations the stems are not broken but bent (right), normally about an inch off the ground and near the plant's first node. In special cases, the stems are bent six inches from the top of the seed head.” (The Crop Circular) With the statement above in mind, it is clear to see that there is a great deal of precision that goes into the creation of crop circles. Television programs that I have seen in the past implies that these formations or done during the night. This can be held as truth as the “Mowing Devil” in the 17th Century was said to be done over night. Given the size of the crop circles and the precision of their formation, who or what can be blamed for their creation' With such geometry, precision and knowledge of plant growth, there must be a great mind or great minds at work here. There are many theories behind the formations. They range from unknown energy forces, higher beings or extraterrestrials to simple man made hoaxes. With a rise in suspicion and numerous assumptions that we are not alone in the universe, several groups have made attempts to catch crop circles in the creation stage. Skeptics and surveillance groups have stood above and around fields in an attempt to catch the circle makers in the act. This would be a perfect way to expose crop circles as being man made. One of such surveillance operations yielded a strange outcome which may have led to speculation of an unknown source of creation. “In one situation a shining object was filmed hovering above a field when several small red lights were seen emanating from it. They operated slowly above the heads of the crop and disappeared at phenomenal speed when approached. Wherever these balls were seen, small 'grapeshot' circles later appeared in the crop.” (The Crop Circular) What could have been the origin of these balls' This may very well have been an unknown energy force but still remains unexplained. At this point it would be possible to assume that the formations known as crop circles could not possibly be the result of humans being artistic but the outcome of movement by an unknown energy force. This assumption was taken by many up until two men, Doug Bower and Dave Chorley claimed that they made crop circles in England. They claimed to be responsible for the circles made since the late 70’s. “They said that they used a 1.2 meter board that was attached to a rope that they hung around their necks. One held one end of the string in the center to determine the radius, while the other held the other end and stomped down on the plants with the board,” (Crop Circles theories). That confession by “Doug and Dave” was very interesting. That explained a number of the mysterious formations found in England during their time. However, given the numerous formations across the world, it is doubtful that man could have created all of them. According to Colin Andrews. "Based in our research, I concluded that approximately 80 percent of all the crop circles we investigated in England from 1999 through the year 2000 were manmade.” Who or what could be responsible for the unaccounted 20 percent' With the numerous planets that exist in our universe, it may be possible that the inhabitants of those planets are communicating with us through these mysterious circles. There are beliefs that the circles are not means of communication but mere marks caused by the landing of alien space crafts known as UFO’s “Some of the patterns showed a central circle surrounded by four symmetrically placed smaller circles--clearly, it was concluded, caused by a flying saucer and its four landing pods.” (Crop Circles and Aliens) Inhabitants of another planet may very well be the ones responsible for those crop circles which remain a creative mystery. Although no conclusive evidence of such spacecrafts has been found, the theory still exists. Though there are numerous theories, there never seems to be a perfect explanation. Taking into consideration all that I have read and meditated upon during this research, I conclude that there are many ways to explain the existence and origin of crop circles. There are those who firmly believe that aliens are communicating through them, others who claim that they are man made and those who think that there is a slight possibility of the existence of some energy force that may be the culprit. While a few men strongly claim that they are the creators of crop circles and possess proof of the tools and process used to create them, some questions still aren’t answered. Who made the crop circles of the earlier centuries' Why are genuine crop circles so precise in nature and physically different in comparison to those that were obviously or proven as man made' If they are man made, where did the idea of creating such things in crop fields come from' Science usually has a way of solving mysteries and in most cases illuminating fraud in respect to mysterious occurrences but has no undisputed explanation for the crop circle phenomenon. Further research into this mysterious topic may reveal that it may not be a “who” but a “what” that is truly responsible for the existence of crop circles.
