Love Conquers All - an adaptation from Mary Shelly's Frankenstein We walked hand and hand, in a dilatory manner, through the verdure of the forest- the dark, deserted, dreary forest. I knew he didn’t want me to come; he deplored every step we took. I didn’t care though. I enjoyed every minute we had together, even when he was in great turmoil. “Victor it will be alright, do not be desponding, the creature just wants to talk to us; he wants a chance to explain the reasoning behind his actions.” “Elizabeth - sweet, sweet Elizabeth - you have no idea what an unhallowed thing we are about to be faced with, if you feel you must make haste, let it be done; I will make it through alone.” “That would only efface your fears and the chance to explore my curiosity.” “I remember that one dreary night of November, when I beheld the accomplishments of my toils; like a bad recurring dream. I stared over the lifeless thing that lay at my feet; my obsession for the past two years. (1)The rain pattered against the windowpanes, my candle was almost burnt out, when suddenly out of the corner of my eye I saw the dull yellow eye of the creature open; its breath was rigid and its limbs moved in a sudden jerk. I had desired it with an ardor forever; but now that I had finished, the dream vanished and I was filled with horror and disgust for what I had just created. I rushed out of the room with exhortation, I couldn’t put myself to face the thing I had produced; the atrocious monster in my small bedroom. Elizabeth, do you choose to witness this calamity; are you sure you can face this fiend' If I had the choice not to, I would. I’d make haste and run as far away from here as possible.” “No, we face this monster together, or not at all; this is my decision.” We continued to walk through the luxuriant tall trees until we made it to the valley. There is where I spotted the creature for the first time. (3) It was more hideous then Victor had described; his dull yellow eyes and skin glowed in the darkness like many moons - dark, scary, hideous moons. A shiver ran down my spine, but I knew I must stay strong; prove to Victor I was courageous. Together, we took another step toward the creature and then paused. This was the exordium of a very long night. “My dear Victor, respire and do not be tumultuous; let him say what he has come here to say. Speak now creature.” “I have come to conciliate for my actions; I give you my adjurationof the truth of my story. I didn’t intend to hurt your family, but can you blame me' You left me with no subsistence; I was alone with no one to lean on. If thou thy creator, my parent, how could you abounded me' I was a young tyro when you left me to fend for myself. I procured a companion and when I found William I sought my chance. As I approached, he screamed and through his howls he said your name; my paroxysm of rage over took me and I killed him; not because I desired to. (6)Do you understand me' I was never taught to control my emotions because you left me!” “(7) I will not hear you! Begone, vile wretch! You shall be execrated for your actions; leave now so I may be disencumbered from you forever!” At that moment, the creature became a monster; he charged at my dear Victor with all of his force. He pushed me out of the monsters path, and stood his ground. This fight was incredulous; how could this calm creature become this vile, sinful monster so quickly' As I stood there contemplating, the monster was hurting Victor. What was I to do' I could not let myself stand there while he got devoured. This fight was so smitten to me that without another thought, I became part of the quarrel. Victor lay near lifelessness on the cold, hard ground. (4) To make this fight worth it I must do two things: kill the monster and save Victor. The monster charged at me; to win this fight I had to use my mind to outsmart him and his physical advantage. I shot out my leg and tripped the monster. He slammed into a large Red Alder, which split on contact. As he recovered I grabbed a piece of the tree to defend myself. He was indefatigable. He charged at me once again; this time I was going to complete my first task. I used the trunk of the tree to push him back, but this did not come with consequence. I felt the tree etch itself into my stomach and I felt the warm blood drip down my dress. However, I was not going to give up; with one more look at Victor, I charged at the monster using all the energy I had left in my body. Somehow, with one fluid push, the monster fell down the precipitous valley; he fell for what seemed forever and with one clunk, I knew he was gone and we had been absolved; he was never to bother my family and me again. I fell to the ground, exhausted, until I remembered Victor. I ran over to him and I heard a fluid breath; I was overjoyed. “(9) Elizabeth not only were you brave, heroic and fearless, but also your ideas were luminous. Your sagacity was dazzling. I cannot believe he is gone forever - no longer allowed to torture me - all because of you, my lovely wife. Thank you!” His amiable flattered me. “O, Victor I was petrified, but all I thought of was you, vulnerable, lying on the cold earth, all alone. Enough, we must move swiftly and find you help right now. Your life means the most to me.” “Elizabeth, I am alright; put out your arm so I may balance and not collapse to the soil.”(10) One might believe we walked back the same way we had come; instead we walked without the burden of the monster on our shoulders - the thing that had miserably controlled our lives for the past few years. We never experienced a moment of ennui that day; indeed we would have many stories to share with our children one day. Citation: Shelly, Mary. Frankenstein.
