Abraham Lincoln was the sixteenth President of the United States, serving from March 1861 until his assassination on April 14, 1865. He was the best president because he successively led his country through its greatest crises, the American Civil War, saving the union, ending slavery, and in the end, he was assassinated for his beliefs. To begin, Abraham was the best president because he was the president over the North during the Civil War. The main causes of the Civil War were the South wanted to have slaves to have free labor, and the North did not want any slaves because they felt that it violated the rights of man. Subsequently, the South separated and called themselves the confederate states. The South declared war on the United States because of the Emancipation Proclamation that freed all the slaves. When the Civil War was drawing to an end, Abraham then formed the thirteenth amendment. That amendment said that slavery or involuntary service is illegal. Additionally, he was the best president because he gave a speech called the Gettysburg Address. The most noticeable battle of the Civil War was the battle at Gettysburg. While the union won the war at Gettysburg, it was also the bloodiest battle in the war. This is important because it also hurt Lincoln's war effort. Abraham Lincoln gave a speech called the Gettysburg address. The main idea behind the Gettysburg address was to recognize the men to fought in the battle and to remind people why the men were fighting. Now the Gettysburg address is the most recited speech in United states history. Consequently, on April 14, 1865, Abraham Lincoln was assassinated by the man named John Wilkes Booth because Lincoln did what he thought was right and John Wilkes Booth did not like or agree with it. Booth only planed on kidnapping Abraham Lincoln in exchange for the confederate prisoners. Then when he went to a speech on April 11 that promoted the rights for blacks to vote. So John had a little group to kill the vice-president, Andrew Johnson and secretary of state William H. Seward. When Abraham Lincoln went to a play call Our American Cousin, Booth waited until the funniest part of the play in order for the laughter to muffle the sound of his gun. When the play got to that point, he jumped up, aimed the 0.44 caliber derringer at his head, and pulled the trigger. Then he jumped off the stage and yelled "thus always for tyrants." He managed to escape with a broken leg. There was a 12 day man hunt for Booth, and he was cornered in a barn in Virgina and shot, he died later because of his wounds. Ultimately, on account of the way Lincoln led the United States through the Civil War and because he was shot as a result of doing what he thought was right, he was the best president.
