Abortion
Abortion is a very controversial issue in the current society. Despite the fact that many people view it as an illegal action, there are just as many who think that it is justified, and thus should be legalized. However, from my perspective, there are many pro’s than con’s as to why abortion should be legalized.
To start with, a woman could have become pregnant out of rape. In all due fairness, it would be insensible to force a woman in such a situation to retain the pregnancy up to the time of birth. This is because bringing up such a child would be such a big source of emotional distress to the woman as every time the woman sees the child, she will constantly remember her rape experience. Besides, it is common knowledge that a child who is conceived through rape is usually unplanned for. At times, the raped woman may not be in a position to provide for the child. Thence, there would be no point of bringing up a child that was not planned for as this would result to unnecessary strain and in worse cases, the child may end up in streets or in a children’s home.
Secondly, there are situations whereby a woman’s life could be at stake as a result of the pregnancy. Profoundly, such a woman should be allowed to abort since failure to do so could result to loss of both the mother and the unborn child. Furthermore, incase a child survives in such a situation and the mother dies, there will still be a cause for alarm as the child will not be brought up by the mother. A child not being brought up by the mother will mean that the child will not be breastfed and this is likely to affect the immunity of the child during early days. Other social and psychological impacts of a child being brought up in such a situation are innumerable.
Thirdly, by illegalizing abortion, women will be denied a right of choice. It is important to leave it up to a woman to make a choice on whether to give birth or not to. Besides, illegalizing abortion in a country will certainly evoke women to use crude ways so as to terminate pregnancy. Needless to say, this will worsen the situation. Moreover, denying women the right to abort in a country will result to some women travelling to other countries where abortion is legalized. Other women will deploy people who can help them to carry out abortion, which is more dangerous as these people may not necessarily be professionals. For these reasons, women should be let to abort at will.
Finally, the reasons as to why many religions view abortion as an evil act are not justified. Most religious people hold the view that conducting an abortion is against God’s will. Nevertheless, no human being can exactly know what divine entities think. Again, it is important for those religious people who base their argument who base their arguments on Holy books to realize that meanings change over time. Moreover, there are some religions that argue that abortion leads to the suffering of an innocent child. They even go ahead to use the word abortion and murder interchangeably. However, it is important to note that an embryo is not a baby yet. Again, for a person to undergo suffering, he or she must be conscious. Consciousness develops hand in hand with the brain. Thence, conducting an abortion before the brain has developed does not cause any suffering to the fetus. On the same note, those religions that view abortion as murder and thus a violation of one of the Ten Commandments should rethink about the whole issue logically. This is because the reason as to why God instructed man not to murder was so that man could live joyfully in the world. If giving birth to a child will limit the joy of the woman, then it is wrong for the mother to give birth.
For the aforementioned reasons, I insist that abortion is a rightful act and should be legalized in our societies. This is because, there are many pro’s than con’s associated with legalizing abortion.
