What is the coast of a human life. Not an American life, but all humans in general. Before we can decided this we must consider what is important to us as a people. Maybe more in the sense of what is important to our leaders. The decision to drop the atomic bomb was just that...Atomic. It coast millions of lives, lives across the globe. August 6th of 1945 the was day the first bomb was dropped on Japan, but in no way was it the first bomb to be dropped. Months of preparation, and numerous test bombs were dropped on your, mine, and our soil. The very same soil that we were fighting to defend. These war weapons did not just kill the enemy, but our own flesh and blood. Our government ran tests over and over again in so called isolated areas, which is most cases were not so isolated. The very same radiation that was used to murder the women and children in Japan, was now in our air, in our water, and in our soil doing the exact same here. Now the question arises why would such horrible weapons be used in people rich areas. Correct this was a time of war, but we were not fighting elderly men, or pregnant women, so why was the bomb not targeted at more of a military facility. Could there be an underlying reason that our all powerful government incarcerated cities not bases' Were these attacks on Japan in anyway good long-range decisions' Times do change, but the value of a human life should not.. Today our great nation takes pride defending it’s people from harm, the same harm that the United States of America inflicted on Japan. Our Government had other options, and knew that we could use them. 

There was no need to bomb either of the Japanese cities, it was by no means a good long-term decision, in fact we as a nation are fighting the same use of chemical warfare today. The two atomic bombs were dropped on August 6th and 9th of 1945 on the two Japanese cities, Hiroshima and Nagasaki, respectively. Truman, our nation’s president, said that we had no other options other then to use the S-1(the atomic bomb.) This was decided among him self and his advisors in a meeting at the pentagon on May 28th, 1945, just twenty days after his proposal of an “Unconditional surrender.” On May 8th the president gave a much more precise definition to the phrase unconditional surrender. Our blows will not cease until Japanese military and naval forces lay down their arms in unconditional surrender. Just what does unconditional surrender of the armed forces mean for the Japanese people' It means the end of the war. It means the termination of the influence of the military leaders who have brought Japan to the present disaster....Unconditional surrender does not mean the extermination or enslavement of Japanese Japan is a nation rich in history, and overwhelmed with patriotic pride. Their country would have laid down if there was no threat to the emperor within the confines of this “unconditional surrender.” Joseph Grew, the Acting Secretary of State, had a real fondness for the Japanese people. Grew spent 10 years in Japan and thought that a end to the war would with out a bombing would be humane and it would avoid alienating Japan as the struggle for influence in postwar Asia. The surrender did not happen, so 28 days later Truman retracted his offer. He was told by his advisors, including Secretary of War, Mr. Stimson, that this was not the right time for an announcement of this kind. If the war would go on for any longer a greater number of American lives would be lost, estimated around 500,000 more. Stimson added, the atomic bomb was a “master card” to be played. Now the stage has been set for one of the worlds worst destruction of man kind in history. “The bomb was dropped to save American lives and to bring a quicker end to the war.” 

 Or so this was and has been the defense for dropping S-1. Hiroshima was the first targeted city for the bombings. It was said to the public that our armed forces were attempting to target a military base of some kind, which is why they chose Hiroshima. This is not true in the least. Before the atomic bomb was considered a vital threat, Hiroshima was not considered a primary military base. In fact the reason that Hiroshima was not bombed before was because it had been judged to be of low priority. Originally hid for the public, our leaders, the Interim committee, had decided that the dropping of the A-bomb would be a dramatic psychological blow to the Japanese. The government knew that the bomb could have been dropped in an un-urban area, but chose against it. They wanted to send a message and make it clear to the world that the United States meant business. The next questions that arises is why was the second city of Nagasaki targeted, and attacked so quickly. There was no need for the second bomb in the sense of world war two, but more so that of the Soviet Union. McGeorge Bundy said: Hiroshima alone was enough to bring the Russians in; these two events together brought the crucial imperial decision for surrender, just before the second bomb was dropped...There can be little doubt that the news of a second terrible attack strengthened the peace party and further shook the diehards, but the degree of this effect cannot be gauged...a delay would have been relatively easy, and I think right. There was no need for the second bomb, it was used only to send a message to the Soviets. This may have been the end of WWII, but just the start of the cold war. In a cowardly attack of terrorism, the United States murdered thousands of Japanese people in order to send a message to the Soviet Union. The bombings in general are looked at by most people as wrong, but the reasons that they were used are not even moral. The first use of the atomic bomb was in no way a good long-range decision. It killed thousands of Japanese people the very instance it was detonated, and thousands more there after. It may have ended the war quicker, but no American lives were saved. In fact more Americans lost their lives form the radiation in our own country then would have died fighting the rest of the war. People in the U.S. were dying from cancer in their own home as a result of the radiation. Entire desert cities were being eliminated with cancer, and this was all the aftermath of the S-1 testing. In political terms, some say that the use of the bomb was very necessary. One theory in why the bomb was dropped was because they feared political criticism if they were to show any “softness” toward Japan and by letting the emperor decide to surrender this would happen. More so we are forced to look back to the Soviet Union for our answers. It was said by Hebert Feis, “It is quite possible that it was thought the proof of the power of the weapon, as demonstrated in actual warfare, might be an effective source of added authority to the American Government in the settlement of matters at issue whit the Soviet Union.” The bomb was not dropped to end the war with Japan, but as a political statement aimed at the Soviet Union. With this said an ethical examination of our government must be construed. It is absolute murder to kill helpless and defenseless women and children in this way. This not even being the worst part. An atomic bomb was decided to be used, but for no better reason to send a message. Not to help save Americans lives, not to destroy the enemy, but to send a political statement to another country. There was nothing ethical about this decision, and to most people, the act of violence that was used towards Japan is the same type of terrorism that our nation is trying to fight today. Today we fight the “war on terrorism.” 

What exactly are we fighting for' Are we fighting because of the senseless act that occurred on September 11th, 2001' Or the fact the someone took the innocent lives of our nations people. No one in the world trade canter attacks had to do with the airliners that collided with the towers, just as the women and children of Japan had nothing to do with the bombings. There is no way to think that this was a justifiable incidence. Today we are consistently fighting attacks upon our home land. Ranging form suicide bombings, to anthrax, there is not one sole that can say they do not have a problem with this, and the majority of the people in this country would fight to the death to put an end to it. The odd thing is that we are fighting the same war that we were over fifty years ago. The only difference is that we are on the other side. In 1945, the United States Government acted in such a way that would most definitely be considered an act of terrorism in the present time. Hiroshima was not a military base, it was never considered a high priority until the atomic bomb was decided to be used. We used our bombs just as Osam Bin Laden used his planes. They were both used as huge canvases to paint the world a picture of what could be done. There was no need for either of these attacks to happen, but both “great leaders” in their followers eyes, wanted to send a message. There was nothing ethically sound about the attacks on Japan, it was selfishly unjust termination of human lives. Neither you nor I can put a price on the life of a human, even more so there is no excuse for what happened on those two horrifying days in August to the people of Japan. 

With in a four month period over 210,000 people died as a result of the bombings in Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Even more shocking is that 65 percent that were killed were women, children, or the elderly. A survivor from Hiroshima, Tamiko Tomonaga said, “the atomic bomb effected the most disastrous damage on the weakest people.” The bombs were not dropped on military bases, but cities filled with young children and their mothers. It was a heartless act that was nothing more than a statement directed toward the Soviet Union. The bombs could have been dropped somewhere else but were not. There were no ethical consideration at the time of detonation, and many weak people died. The pride of our nation should have been put a side, and many people across the globe would have been saved.-M
