Cyrano De Bergerac: The Price of Love
If there is one thing that occupies Cyrano's mind as much as the image of Roxanne, it is the image of freedom. Cyrano de Bergerac by Edmond Rostand is the story of a witty soldier and gallant comrade who is as obsessed with the concept of freedom as he is smitten with his beautiful cousin. Over the course of his lifetime, Cyrano battles the Spanish, takes over the local theater company and pours his heart into love letters for which another man receives credit. In all phases of his endeavors, Cyrano stresses the importance of freedom, and states that his goal is to live life as a free man.
But the more deeply Cyrano falls in love, the more he also falls victim to the very obstacles he believes prevent a man from achieving freedom. To him, freedom means not being indebted to another individual, or to depend on anyone else for aid or support. "I am too proud to be a parasite," he declares nobly. "But
