Thoroughly Modern Millie Thoroughly Modern Millie On November 16, 2002, I attended the matinee performance of Thoroughly Modern Millie at the Marquis Theatre on Broadway. I walked into the theater filled with curiosity and wonder: a musical about the 1920’s, flappers, and speakeasies' Two and a half hours later, I walked out singing. Upbeat and enthusiastic, candy-coated and bubble gum pink, Thoroughly Modern Millie is truly alive. Despite what Ben Brantley of the New York Times conveys in his theater review on April 19, 2002, shortly after its open, I feel that through the enthusiasm of Sutton Foster, the liveliness of the performance is the key to its success. Foster plays the title role of Millie Dillmount, a small town girl from Kansas who travels to New York City to seek out a new life of independence, excitement, and a wealthy new husband. Creativity overflowed in the sets and choreography.
