Psychoanalytical Limitations Psychoanalytic Limitations Psychoanalysis is a theory that cannot only be applied in a doctor patient format, but can also be used as a way of interpreting literature. In doing this, the psychoanalytic literary critic must focus on the author, mainly childhood experiences, and also focus on how the text(s) relate to these experiences. Although the psychoanalytic literary critic approach to studying literature helps to bring a new appreciation to the author and his works, the whole theory and process has serious limitation that can not be ignored. In this paper, I will focus on the approach that a psychoanalytic literary critic must take in analyzing a text, the way that the id, ego, and superego correlate to the text, reader, and author, and the pros and cons in using this approach to studying literature. Firstly, in order to understand the pros and cons of using psychoanalytical literary theory, we must understand the method of reading that the analyst must approach. The critic will be reading the actual text, the manifest content, this is what the author believes his work to mean.
