Everyman:A Guide To The Gates Of Heaven
Everyman is, like many of its contemporary plays in the middle
ages, concerned greatly with death, it being a morality play designed to send a
message to the audience about the traditional Christian beliefs on death and the
afterlife. Unlike many previous works on the subject that had certain values
represented by characters in the story, in Everyman, these values and objects
are directly personified, so as to give no doubt, even to the simplest members of
the audience what exactly is meant to be happening. The story, although short,
has much significance in that it is meant to show the stages that people should
go through while they are dying. The play makes its grim point that we can take
with us from this world nothing that we have received, only what we have given.
Everyman suggests that there is an ultimate accountability, but man has the
capability, through faith and reason, to steer himself toward God by using the
teachings of the Church to enable him to do the good which is required of all
men.
At the beginning of the play, the Messenger comes in to give us a
brief introduction and summary of the story, just in case the audience is not
intelligent enough to figure out what is actually meant to
