Everyman:A Guide To The Gates Of Heaven Everyman is, like many of its contemporary plays in the middle ages, concerned greatly with death, it being a morality play designed to send a message to the audience about the traditional Christian beliefs on death and the afterlife. Unlike many previous works on the subject that had certain values represented by characters in the story, in Everyman, these values and objects are directly personified, so as to give no doubt, even to the simplest members of the audience what exactly is meant to be happening. The story, although short, has much significance in that it is meant to show the stages that people should go through while they are dying. The play makes its grim point that we can take with us from this world nothing that we have received, only what we have given. Everyman suggests that there is an ultimate accountability, but man has the capability, through faith and reason, to steer himself toward God by using the teachings of the Church to enable him to do the good which is required of all men. At the beginning of the play, the Messenger comes in to give us a brief introduction and summary of the story, just in case the audience is not intelligent enough to figure out what is actually meant to death, everyman, story, first, saved, god, church, audience, speech, play, one, meant, man, life, final, characters, been, world, seems, nobody, modern, mankind, irony, humor, good, doctor, concept, case, book, before, because, actually, writer’s, while, views, understanding
