Dakota Sioux Wars I. Attention Catcher: During the time of the Dakota War and before, the Civil War had already begun. Many whites were gone to fight in the war. Since the Sioux had been disgusted with their situation for sometime they saw fit to attack the white man when he was at his weakest fighting other whites. It is interesting and perhaps ironic that at the same time African-Americans struggled for freedom, Native Americans faced a very similar conflict.

II. Listener Relevance Link: Most of us have experienced a incident or situation where you feel you have been treated unjustly or unfair to the point where you have to stand your ground and not falter until you have at hand some kind of justice. I am quite sure this is how the Sioux people felt.

III. Speaker Credibility Statement: After much research I have come to feel a deep sorrow for the Sioux people having their land stolen from them and all the misfortune that followed. It is hard to understand some other human beings lack the ability to feel compassion. IV. Thesis Statement: The Dakota Sioux War was an act of the Sioux people fighting for self-preservation. V. Preview: First, I will talk about what started the conflict; secondly I will cover the war and its battles, and finally the wars ending and its out come. I. First main point: What precipitated the conflict. A. Subpoint: For sometime, the Dakota Indians as well as many other groups of Native Americans received pressure from European settlers. After being swindled into debt by fur traders by purchasing on credit due to late rations, the Dakota Indians were practically forced into signing a treaty relinquishing all lands west of the Mississippi. B. Subpoint: Commissioner of Indian Affairs, Charles E. Mix informed the Dakota chiefs that the government also required all lands north of the Minnesota River which included half of the their reservation.

The treaty, though it seemed unfair to the Dakota and was in fact unfair, still provided a lofty image of “what a great deal” the Indians were receiving. C. Subpoint: After being promised a reservation, farms, yearly rations of food, and payments of gold. The Dakota signed the treaty declaring that the land was no longer theirs. Rations came late, as were the smaller then promised money and gold payments tensions rose. Bad winters, unproductive crop’s, and all game hunting diminished something bad was bound to happen. Starvation mounting and late payments, the Dakota Indians decided that they would take no more.

A. Subpoint: August 17, 1862 four Dakota kill five settlers near Litchfield. Councils are held among the Dakota on whether to wage war. Despite deep divisions on the issue war is the chosen course. B. Subpoint: August 18, 1862, groups of Dakota kill forty-four Americans in attacks on the hope suppressing the uprising. Ten Americans are captured. C. Subpoint: August 19, 1862, sixteen settlers are killed in Dakota attacks in and around New Ulm. D. Subpoint: August 20, 1862, Dakota attack Fort Ridgley, but the fort is successfully defended. E. Subpoint: August 23, 1862, about 650 Dakota attack New Ulm a second time. Although thirty-four die and 100 injured the town is defended. F. Subpoint: 2 September 1862, in the Battle of Birch (near Morton), Americans troops suffer greatest casualties of the war, 200 dead many wounded. G. Subpoint: 23 September 1862, the Battle of Woodlake is a decisive victory for Americans troops. While the Woodlake fighting is in progress, Dakota Indians opposed to the continuation of the war take control of 269 Americans captives held war the Chippewa River. H. Subpoint: 26 September 1862, Dakota friend release American captives. American army marches into Dakota camp and take 1,200 Dakota men, women, and children into custody. Over the next weeks, an additional 800 Dakota warrior’s surrender to American army. The war over there was more injustice to come.

III. Third main point: the American army appoints military commission to try summarily the Dakota for murder and other crimes against Americans. 300 Sioux were sentenced to death. President Lincoln feeling the number was too high agreed to thirty-eight Dakotas to be hanged. The Gallows were set up so all thirty-eight would hang together or simultaneous. On 26 December 1862, the largest execution in American history took place leaving all thirty-eight Dakota dead.

I. Thesis restatement: The Sioux people were forced and had no choice but to fight for survival. II. Main point summary: Hemmed in on a narrow reservation by European white settlers, the Sioux were frustrated by broken treaties, dishonest government agents and fur traders. Near starvation because of crop failure and lack of animal game they were left with no choice, fight or die. III. Clincher: It really is a shame that new comers first abuse a people who were peaceful, intune with nature and in a place. I believe their peaceful and trusting nature was their downfall. In the end with there land stolen from them. They were banished to an even smaller reservation in an area today known as northern Minnesota. http://Encarta.msn.com -Encarta Encyclopedia Article A Closer Look at The Conflict by Dawud Rasheed Duke University, Native American History 1198.-X
