To the cowboys ‘cattle towns’ or ‘cowtowns’ ,as purists referred to them, were merrily desolated towns in the mist of the desert. It was here that these cowboys could rest, get a bite to eat, gamble, or meet women. Most people thought of cowtowns as evil towns, because so much immorality went on in them. At times these places could be exhilarating or sometimes even hazardous. This era was known as the ‘Wild West’. Many of these towns existed in Colorado, Kansas, Oregon and numerous other regions of the United States.

Cowtowns came about because people needed beef in other parts of the U.S., particularly in the Eastern states. At fist cattle were driven from Missouri to Sedalia and later to Baxter Springs, Kansas. In early 1867 Joseph G. McCoy set out to establish a small town in which he could keep cattle. He found a settlement on the route of the Union Pacific Railway Company called Abilene. McCoy purchased land and built cattle pens. It took a little persuading for the Texans to herd their cattle north, but the first carload of cattle was shipped east on September 5, 1867 to Abilene, Kansas. Abilene was the fist of the cowtowns. Each cowtown, thereafter, had the same general layout. Soon after the cowtowns had been established, the noise and smell of the cattle was an ongoing nuisance to the residents. Most cowtowns went through a stage of chaos and corruption.

In July 1871 the more highly regarded women of Abilene made a petition to the mayor to remove the ‘evil in our mist’, and prostitutes were moved to another part of town. At this time the ‘ladies of the night’, as the prostitutes were called were kept in an area called ‘Hide Park’. Violence was also widespread in cowtowns. Cowtowns were tamed, unaccompanied by two-gun marshals. These men were used because they were quicker on the draw than their cowboy opponents. These marshals established law and order. Abilene had no legal status officially until 1869. Although there were numerous cowtowns the “Queen of the Cowtowns” was Dodge City, Kansas. This town was also known as “the wickedest little town in America” and “Buffalo City”. In the 1860’s safety from raiding Indians was imperative in this area. Therefore they built Fort Dodge in 1865 to protect wagon trains. Dodge City was founded the following year, 1867 and got its name from Fort Dodge. This area rapidly attracted travelers and Buffalo hunters. This became their trade center. In September of 1872 the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe railroad was built. South of these tracks, grocery stores, dance halls, restraints, barber shops, blacksmith shops, and saloons were built. This is where the “front street legend”, or businesses built along the street, came into play. During these years, like Abilene, Dodge City had a ‘wild’ stage of mayhem and gun-slinging. There was also no local law enforcement or no authority over the town. During this time the violence in the town was intense. Men scrapped and fought which lead to shootings where several men died. This encouraged the need for a cemetery. The Boot Hill Cemetery, used until 1878, was Dodge City’s fist official cemetery. Dodge City was the Buffalo Capitol for three years until a heap of herds were killed by a mass slaughter. In 1872 through 1874, 850,000 Buffalo hides were shipped from Dodge City. Farmers gathered Buffalo bones and used them as fertilizer or for the manufacture of china. By 1875 the Buffalo was gone for economic purposes. At this time, however, millions of Longhorns were driven to Dodge City from Texas. This increased the economic activity of the town. Characters such as Bat Masterson, Wyatt Earp, Bill Tilghman and Charlie Bassett brought law and order to the town. They helped pass an ordinance stating that guns could not be worn nor carried north of the “deadline”. The “deadline” was the north side of the railroad tracks that ran through Dodge City. On the south side of the railroad track there were no laws and anything went.

During 1876 the population was 1200 and nineteen businesses were permitted to sell liquor. During the first years of the town the population swelled during the summer because of the abundance of cowboys, buyers, gamblers and prostitutes. For entertainment in the cowtowns the people would gamble and listen to musical entertainment in saloons. In the mid and late 1800’s cowtowns were the “place to be”. These towns had everything you could ask for, entertainment, housing, grocery stores. These towns were considered highly developed compared to most towns of the time. Dodge City is a good illustration of cowtowns because it was one of the first ones established, and other cowtowns patterned their laws and physical appearance after this town. Cowtowns have been around since 1867 and they still exist all over the country. These towns are memorials of the ‘Wild West’. -w
