Rousseau And His 11 Stages Of Society *Rousseau There are eleven stages of development of civil society that Rousseau analyzes. The first stage is how society may have formed. Rousseau gives some examples to show how these people would no longer be nomadic and established a society. The people would no longer fall asleep under the first tree or the first cave they found, instead, they found various sharp stones, which they would use as tools, to dig up the soil and collaborate this with branches to make a hut. The establishment of huts/dwelling places led to families residing on their property that they built, thus beginning the growth of families, which led to the start of a society. Due to this first difference out of the state of nature, the lifestyle of men and women changed. Women became accustomed to watching over the hut, while the men went out to hunt. This leads us to the second stage, which is when convenience becomes a burden. Two examples would be fire and water.
