Changes going on in American society at the turn of the century was reflected greatly through Coney Island and its amusements. This new mass culture that was brought on by the younger generation at the time demanded more opportunities outside of genteel respectability. Before the turn of the century “Victorian” values were placed upon the American society. Life was to be disciplined and refined. Social conduct had to be expressed with self-control, modesty and integrity. Hard work at all times was emphasized as the way to improve life in order to keep social order. As far as leisure time was concerned, doing something that related to your job was the only activity socially acceptable. Seriousness seemed to be the social norm at this time and this was the way life was to be lived. When this new generation came along with their influential changing of attitudes, opportunities to expand their knowledge and skills were now not limited by genteel middle class existence. They emerged themselves in urban industrial fields which led to the decline of “Victorian” culture order. The mood of life was to be lived in a more vigorous and exciting way and with this it led to the many cultural changes in the way people lived their lives and how they went about their activities, especially during leisure time. Coney Island was an amusement center that came at a time during the most critical period in American history. Life was changing in social and economical ways which had to be adjusted to going on the fact that an urban industrial society was surely coming into play. Urban amusements were first came to life in 1893 with New York’s Central Park and Chicago’s Columbian Exposition. These two forms of recreation provided a depiction for how social conduct was to be for cultural principles. New York’s Central Park was built to give a sense of peace in nature. There you had the opportunity to go summer boating, horseback riding and winter skating. It was a relaxing environment to spend your leisure time. Chicago’s Columbian Exposition provided a sense of city life and what it would be like. There you had to opportunity to experience a scene of tasteful buildings and a chance to explore a familiar but different setting in the world. When Coney Island amusements came to life in 1895, it was seen as a new form of entertainment which was exciting because it gave way for people to get away from the “Victorian” cultural restraints of life , which was portrayed at these earlier forms of recreation. The beginning of the 20th century presented many obstacles to overcome which included the new coming of Coney Island amusement and played out many changes which is looked at as a representation of American society at this time. Changes in society was becoming more evident in this time due to new ambitions to get past the cultural restraint in society. As this barrier was being broken, the industry was definitely affected in positive ways. Exciting and new industrial developments elevated the course of life. Coney had great potential due to advanced technology, a growing urban population, more spending power and extra leisure time. The economy was at a good point at this time also which revolved around leisure time and consumption. That in itself brought promise to the ` development of Coney Island The rise of Coney Island helped to push this change of society by challenging social order and public conduct even further with this new form of entertainment. Being at Coney Island was exciting because people got a chance to get away and be more open with the way they acted with one another. You were given the opportunity to express yourself in any way you felt appropriate and your activities were unlimited. This new emphasis being placed upon activity, movement and self-expression was massive because it was the beginning of a new way of life that was more free and it took you away from the obstacles of the changing world in the time spent there. Having a radical influence on society made it like a special occasion being there and it was plenty of room to celebrate. Coney Island also influenced what some may call a “sexual revolution”. Young men and women were able to meet and greet one another and show public affection without any restraints. People wanted to be more sexually open and Coney offered this freedom. It was very evident with the different amusements that involved having intimate contact or the lifting of women’s skirts. They had rides where you and your mate could take a boat ride through a tunnel for a little romance also. It was a wonderful thing to be able to do these types of activities because outside of Coney on the streets, it was not as accepted. This was like the starting point for sexual freedom at this time because it made its way to become a topic that was before not seen or even talked about. At Coney you were allowed to be expressive with your sexuality but there was still general respect for one another and nothing was taken out of context. This new culture of leisure served as an agent for many groundbreaking experiences. Immigration came along at this time and played an important role in this society. Immigrants were basically brought over because there was plenty of room for them to be here and the population was needed. The economy benefited well from this and immigrants were willing to do what was needed to be done in order to live in America. Coney helped a great deal for immigrants to become more Americanized in this process in the way that they were included in its development. Overall immigrants were pleased with the spirit of Coney Island and was grateful for the melting pot it presented for individuals everywhere of all races. As Coney Island became more and more popular, the conduct that took place there was looked at in many different aspects. Behavoir there brought up concerns about the environment, why crowds carried out in the way they did, and what was in store for amusements as a whole. The uninhibited nature of being able to let loose and be more sociable in ways not of the “Victorian” social norm posed a problem for some, especially among intellectuals and progressive reformers. They were distraught and somewhat offended by the way people carried themselves at Coney. It was felt that this type of behavoir was impermissible and should not have been allowed. The ability to let go of proper conduct was seen as lunacy and as a result they believed that “society had become dangerously unbalanced”. They felt that people were being tricked into this new emergence of entertainment and being used to make a profit. Thus, they responded to the chaos and disorder by offereing a solution of banning all amusement parks and forms of nonintellectual entertainment and provide more supervised amusements which would provide discipline to bring back social order. It was saw best to concentrate specifically on children because it was believed that how children behaved was the formation of a future culture. Self-control was the biggest concern for these intellectuals and progressive reformers and Coney Island did not present this reality to them. Though Coney became a popular resort for people to get away and have fun, it eventually became a piece of history. When it came along, genteel cultural standards were heavily placed upon people and being at Coney Island provided a way to get away from those restraints. It basically added to the upcoming of an urban-industrial world which included the altering of work and leisure. The genteel culture eventually lost all influence over this changing society and the desire to rebel against it was no longer needed. The point had been made that a new mass culture was in effect. Later after this realization, new forms of amusement parks came to life and the need to resort to Coney was still in high numbers, but it did not give the same aura as it once did. The significance of Coney Island was not of importance as it once was, therefore leading to its end. Coney Island basically presents piece of history which is looked at as the breaking grounds of a new culture at the turn of the century. It represented the broader changes going on at that time and provided the emerging mass culture with a way to show their independence. With this, America’s history was revolutionized with this important change and has contributed to many aspects of the American society today.
