What We Learn From Discrimination
Recently my sociology class and I have been studying the Holocaust and discrimination as a whole. Going in depth on such a sensitive subject was difficult at first, but I realized that it is something everyone should learn about. In order to prevent such events as the Holocaust from reoccurring, we must understand why discrimination is wrong and how it can lead to violence, lowered self-confidence within a race or culture, and in the most serious of matters death.
Treatment or consideration based on class or category rather than individual merit is what discrimination can be defined as. Such thoughts can lead to hostility, thus resulting in violence. A perfect example of this is when the Germans tried to kill off the entire Jewish. The Germans viewed the Jews as an ethnically lower race than themselves, and used them as scapegoats for the ills of German society. Other violent acts include the hanging of African Americans throughout the 1800s and the early 1900s and the treatment of heretics by the Catholic Church in the medieval ages.
